Hello all, I have finally finished the bulk of my website so now I want to create a site map. My site has lots of pages, so manually created a site map will be painful. Is there an easy way to do this? My wife is the designer and she specializes in ASP, but confesses little knowledge of automatic site map generation. We used FrontPage to design the site, and the feature that FrontPage includes is a joke. Frontpage is a joke. All you need to do for a Site Map is to create direct links to all your pages. A Site Map is mainly for people looking for a quicker way to get to "deep" pages and helps search engines index your site better and faster. ------------- http://www.iportalx.net" rel="nofollow">

So just a manual creation then, huh? Also, does a seach engine crawler
look for a specific word like "site map" in the keywords of that page? Sorry if I seem a bit green at this. Also, if I do make the manual site map, is it best to create the links from outside the site or inside? In other words, copy the address to the page from the browser and use that as the link, or create the links from within FrontPage? ------------- __________________________ Ricky L. Frontpage used to be a joke, the old versions where, but the newer ones
apparently are reasonable but just have been tainted with their parents
ratings. You could use the ASP FSO object to scan the drives, but it would be hard to automatically categorise them and filter out the ones you don't want seen. If making a site map is too time consuming, maybe you should invest the time in a decent site search, that could be equally as useful to a visitor if it works well. |

Using relative links - e.g. ../myotherpage.asp instead of http://www.mysite.com/myotherpage.asp - http://www.mysite.com/myotherpage.asp is ok. The Search bots won't have any trouble following them.
Put the link to your site map high up on the home page - before any javascript/dhtml menus - sometime the bots get lost in menus.
I'd echo Gullanian's comments about front page. I've had it on my machine since V2.0 - a lot of my clients use it. FP 2003 is very good.
I find I use it instead of Dreamweaver, Visual Studio, or Ultraedit for a lot of quick stuff.
I work mostly in code view and don't use their FP-bots or dhtml stuff. Their admin tools and reports are great. Use the link/navigation view to plan your site map.

Some of the info is dated - e.g. I more emphasis is put on keywords separated by hyphens in a domain name now. But overall, the principles remain the same. -------------
