Very upset with my host. Lost my entire account with Gearhost. The
company site, mailing list, forum, numerous movies and their relevant
html files and of course four access databases that had not been backed
up for a week. They have a very good explanantion but that doesn't help
me. I just want to know if this is reason to move to another host. How
often does this happen and should I stick with them? Maybe I need to make the decision once I've cooled down. Any advice? Thanks Brad |

by this it looks like they don't have a back up system? because if they did they could restore you to that. what explanation did they give, as that should be taken into account when deciding. but i would say that they should have a back up system, when i used Accss DB's i ujsed to back up at least every other day. even if its just over writing the existing back up. |

its a hard call to make. is this the first time its happened? if they have been fine apart from this then i may give them one last chance. otherwise i would at least take a look around and see if there is something better, while your at a cross road.. with no actual problems with changing host at this point as you will have to upload to a host one way or another and sort things out. |

Rule #1: You are only as good as your last successfult backup - from which you can recover. The important part is the last portion of that rule. It applies to the host, but also to the customer. Never totally depend on someone else no matter who the host is. Remembering that, I always keep backups of any files possible. For instance, I use a combination of http://www.secondcopy.com - www.secondcopy.com and http://www.southrivertech.com - webdrive to keep automate backups to my local test server for all my personal sites. Of course, SQL Server backups are a different story and depend on what your host allows, what software you have, etc. One thing to remember if you do change hosts, if that your site will be temporarily down while the DNS change propagates. does this explanation explains why you lost your company site, mailing list, forum, numerous movies and their relevant html files and the four access databases that you didn't have them backed up for a week?

It's really up to you. As noted, if it's a first time, you could forgive and forget - all hosts have problems. Moving sites is also a lot of work. At the least, you'll probably have some mail interruption. You might also have downtime if you can't migrate db's in a very short time - you ned to trial that first to make sure connection strings, etc. work on the new site.
I know a few people around here are very happy with GH. I tried them for about six months and found them (MHO) to be a little short of being reliable enough for production sites. -------------
