http://www.webhosting.info/ allows you to see how many other domains are using the same IP address as you.

Apparently my site is hosted on a server with 3449 other sites.

Do you think this is actually all one server or can a shared IP address be used with multiple servers?

A shared ip address can be used with multiple servers but some appliance is necessary. It's not usually done by hosting companies.

Far more common though is the use of multiple shared ip's on/directed to one server. The 3449 sites are for a single ip directed to your server. Ther may be more than one ip going to it.

I just thought that 3449 is a bit much for one shared server especially when I have been getting server busy errors lately because of the other sites. Confused

I believe most hosts concerned with performance target somewhere between 1000-2000 domains on a windows shared server. I'd think that over 3k would be too high.

I had server busy errors on a dedicated server with one domain on it - I really screwed up some code - lol. Embarrassed

On a previous host, I noticed a slowness on servers with more than 2k domains - but that may have been just me.

You think that's a lot...
http://cyber.law.harvard.edu/people/edelman/ip-sharing/list-1.html

This site lists the biggest host (at the time, it's a couple years old) with 970,412 domains on a single IP!!! I'm sure that the vast majority of those are parked domains with no traffic, but still that's a lot of domains on a single IP. I used to have a domain hosted with a host that shows about 400 domains and performance was far from great I'd hate to see what it would be like with 2000.
