I would argue that the Internet has probably contributed to stagnant
literacy rates. Have you read any emails or IM's lately? Very few
people use correct grammar in speech or normal writing much less in

Does it really matter? I make a concious effort to use correct
grammar, it contributes to appearance and is essential in business. But at the end of the day if you can understand the person in the context of a casual conversation, nothings wrong... right? |

With casual conversations, no it doesn't really matter. I make occasional typos, etc, all the time, but even with personal email I am very conscious of grammar and spelling. Business settings are very different. Even with my small business in a town of less than 20,000 people, I transact a lot of deals via email and IM and that fact continues to grow. First impressions cannot be undone so I try to type just as I speak, which is using a very good command of grammar. Proper grammar use is essential. I try to use proper grammar as much as
possible (although this message is probably wrought with mispelled
words!). I would say the Internet is to blame, not only because of IM's and e-mail, but also because people who visit websites do not want to read a bunch of stuff. Everything is flashy and abbreviated. Television can also be a blame as well: reality shows are popular and the news folks only report on "news worthy" items like the finger in the Wendy's frostie, and Michael Jackson's trial. How often do we hear news about the Cassini mission, or global warming? And have you ever read a newspaper lately?
