I'm trying to integrate this nifty RTE into my auction application and I get this error message:

Microsoft VBScript compilation error '800a03ea'

Syntax error

/RTEs/functions/RTE_functions_common.asp, line 60

Private Function RTEenabled()
^

any Ideas what's causing this?

It could be a corrupted file, try reuploading the file 'functions/RTE_functions_common.asp'

Otherwise as this line is only decalring a Private Function I can't see why you are getting the error unless there is a problem with the server.
