Hey guys,

As some of you know I'm looking for a dedicated server, however I have concluded I may save a lot of money if I do it myself.

Electricity wise it will cost me around £6 a month to keep a computer on non stop.  My brother is selling his P3 700mhz for £50, which will do the job fine.

The only problem for me is finding a good Internet line.  I need one that allows me to serve a website from, (I'm assuming some companies don't allow the running of commericial sites from their service) and one which has a fast upstream connnection, which is hard to find.  Budget wise I would not like to spend over £40.

Anyone know a good company?  I have scowered the Internet but can not find one.

Most UK home ISP's have a clause in the service agreement that stop you from running any web server on their connection what-so-ever... Some even block port 80 to act as a deterent. You'd probably have to go with a business line because of that, it also depends on whether you  have a BT line etc. And one ISP (forget the name) even limits itself to inner city london

This is the best I can find:

512kbps upstream, 8mbit downstream, it's a bit pointless really, I wish they could switch it around.

I guess what I really want is an SDSL line but they cost a bomb.

I read an article once about someone who lived right next to an exchange. He persuaded them to connect him up with a CAT5 cable. True story.

I read the title of this topic and I knew it would be impossible straight away LOL

Your only option is SDSL but that is pricey. Find a local university and maybe pay them

Running a server at home is fine, but you sacrifice reliability. First, you MUST have a UPS if you are running a service that people are paying for.

You will also likely need more than 512 up. Think 2 Mbps up will give you something to cover you during peak hours.

Your IP will need to be static, and you'll likely need a backup or failover in case of problems. e.g. SDSL + cable.

For a casual site, running from home is fine, but I don't think that you can get away with it very easily.

Most data centers have dual power and data pipes. Usually running through diffeent substations and exchanges. About all of them have the ability to run off of power generators.

I'd think that with your SMS site, where people are paying to have the service available, hosting from home would be a bad thing.
