This suggests that your email settings are incorrect in the admin area

Hmmm, wish that was the end of the matter. Unfortunately it seems that although that test user did validate ok, seems others are still having a problem. Not aware that anything has changed since I successfully tested it.

Now when I try and register a test user, it says

"There is a problem activating your membership."

Another member who tries to register says..

"
you fill in all your info, click the submit button at the bottom, and then i get one of those nasty 404 page not found messages...."

What could be the problem?

try re uploading the file , as they may have become corrupt.

the register, asp file manages all editing, registering etc so it would be the way to that file. or the confirmation page of profile registered etc.

i would say then its something server/host side,

check that the IP Address is not blacklisted. try sending an email though the mail. domain and see if its recieved copy it to yourself also see if internal ones work.

also check if there are any email capping etc. and that you dont require authentification now.

also a good point to check if the mail server has been down during that time
