Subject: Permissions with Front Page

My forum has been up and running for months with no problems till now. There seems to be a conflict with permissions when I open and update my website via ftp within microsoft front page. My admin tells me I can either update live pages or use the forum, not both. There is a conflict with the permissions. Has anyone else had this problem? Does Web Wiz support front page? Thanks in advance.

Having Frontpage permissions installed on your web space does course lots of problems with all ASP applications. You need to publish the forum using Frontpage to keep the Frontpage extensions intacted on the web server. This may or may not work.

In my persoanl opion, dump the Frontpage Extensions as they are more trouble than they are worth and will mean that many ASP applications and other things will not work properly, or at all if you have Frontpage Extensions intsalled.

Hi Dennis and Snatch,

You can run a forum fine using a host with the FP Extensions installed. I have 3 of them and occasionally use FP for certain things.

HOWEVER, I would highly recommend that when uploading the forum use "normal" FTP and not FP's FTP service. Even though I actually like FP, I would also NOT recommend using it to modify the forum pages or any other ASP pages. If you want to use a WYSIWYG editor, I would recommend Dreamweaver or others for that purpose.

As a side note, even after you FTP the files, you will notice later in your forum directory (looking through your FTP client) certain folders like:

_vti_cnf

Leave these alone as FP and the extensions use them to communicate. You WILL NOT harm your server extensions using a normal FTP client. Most hosts tell you this simply because they don't want you deleting or overwriting files that the extensions use. For the most part just don't delete any of the directories that have the "_" in front of them.
