Subject: What’s wrong with my forum?

Hello,

Having problems with my forum here:

http://www.kleenkuip.com/forum/ - http://www.kleenkuip.com/forum/

I can not view any threads and recieve HTTP 500 Internal server error messages.

The database file was about 45meg until I downloaded it. Opened it in Access and performed a Compact and Repair function. It's now about 30meg.

I thought this might fix the forum but I still get Page cannot be displayed errors.

Any suggestions?

make sure the database is not write protected and in a read/write and modify folder.

this is the issue, please turn off http friendly error messages and then you will also see the actual error.

When you re-uploaded it, did you delete the old .ldb file?

.ldb file?

do you mean .mdb?

If so...I uploaded overwriting the old file.

Nope, meant .ldb

Access creates a temporary .ldb file to track who, what, where in the .mdb file. It's kind of like a master user index/tracking file for the db.

If you download the .mdb, compact and repair it, and the re-upload it you can run into problems if the old .ldb file is still there as it will be pointing to places in the .mdb that no longer exist or have been moved.
If you delete the .ldb file, it will be recreated the next time someone hits the db.

Where is this .ldb file stored?

So I can delete it.

The .ldb file would be in the same directory as your .mdb file. Typically, it would only be there if someone is using the db but if the db is out of sync to begin with, or you uploaded the compacted and repaired version while someone was using the old version, the .ldb would still be there.

I checked your site...
The actual error message obtained when friendly errors are turned off is

Microsoft JET Database Engine error '80004005'

Operation must use an updateable query.

/forum/forum_posts.asp, line 326

Basically, it's saying either the db or the directory it's in doesn't have write/modify permissions. As it was working before in the same directory, I'd bet that your ftp program changed the permissions for the .mdb file.

Ok...the only way that worked was to log into my Site Administrator Control Panel and set the read and write permissions.

The forum is now working again.

Thanks to everyone for helping! Clap

Appreciate it. Smile

I am back again with another small problem. Wink

I seem to be getting a lot of this particular error...

Microsoft JET Database Engine error '80004005'

Could not use ''; file already in use.

/forum/common.asp, line 260

This seems to occur more often when loggin in and out.

Seems to be another permissions problem. There is full read and write permissions set on the folder containing the .mdb file.

Thanks for your help!

This is not a local server.

The most connections I have ever seen at one time is about 15-20.

Only time I ever opened in Access was when I started this thread. Because I could not log in to Compact & Repair. I downloaded the entire .mdb file Compacted & Repaired then re-uploaded it.

what size is it on the server, it seems access is being left open or taking its time.

Last time I checked it was about 32meg.

32 megs is quite large for an access database as it is a flat file database system requiring allot of server resources to load the entire database into the web servers memory, not to mention other limitations with Access.

You should look into using SQL Server as the database backend.

Ok my forum seems to be back online again...But I am experiencing log-in and posting problems.

I am hoping that the SQL upgrade is going to fix all of this.
