Google's new IM with voice support. What are your opinions?

The only thing that annoys me is that you cannot set a nickname it seems to be stuck on your name

I'm going off IM, starting to annoy me a bit.  I doubt many people will switch because it'd be such a pain in the ass to try and get all your friends on it.

I don't think I'll even bother trying it. IM is a pain sometimes and I have to do enough of it already. Why add more pain?

True. I have a hard time seeing "yet another IM" being useful to me. I still only use Gmail for storing files, though I do like the interface. But I'm sure Google will try to slug it out. They are getting really aggressive, and I'm not too sure how good it is going to be given the amount of greed they've been showing lately.

Their IM is built on Jabber. Apparently there's some concern about how the open source license is being interpreted and used by google. Google gets away with things that would put MS into court for years.

Jabber programs do not have to be open source Confused

Or maybe I am wrong. I thought only the protocol was open

Yes, only the protocol is open, but google are being critised for using LAMP technology (Linux, Apache, Mysql, PHP, Python, Perl) but not submitted revisions back to the source tree.

I think google may have been dicking with the protocol as well.
It was one of those long technical rant articles so I skimmed a lot Embarrassed
