Does she actually want to use YM or does she want to use something like it - e.g. online chat?

Well everyone has yahoo so she wanted to use that button so people know
if the person they are trying to reach is online or not shes also
looking for the same thing but for AIM. So she wants to use YM and AIM
and is looking for those buttons so people can just im use. thank you
very much.

You'd normally have to mod her im client to post it's status to the web
site. There's a java api for yahoo messenger at sourceforge that I had
looked at a while ago. IIRC, it could status the IM server but was a
hack. You might want to search there to see if there's a .net api.
Yahoo released it's search api but I don't recall seeing their IM api formally released.
