Hi all,

I'm starting to look into getting closer to the actual providing of SMS messages for my website.

I heard that with a GSM mobile connected to a server you could send messages.

My server is in the US, and was wondering if it would be possible to plugin a US sim card and send messages to US locations. If anyone knows anything about these, could they outline the pitfalls and limitations?  And/or any recommendations for hardware.

Also, if it does take a standard sim card does anyone in the USA know of a cheap pay as you go provider for cheap text messaging.  (I don't care about the costs of phone calls, I won't be making any, purley texting only).  I'm trying to look for a rate of around 5 cents per message.

Thanks for any information, it's difficult for me to find any!

I think what you'll need is a gsm modem on the system and perhaps access to a couple of ip ports. I know some people who set up an sms message gateway using something from activexperts.com. They were pretty happy with it but I don't know the details.

You might try looking at sourceforge. Most of their stuff would be for unix but if it's written in perl or php it should be portable.

I think there's a couple of sms extensions for some webmail apps - don't recall if there's one for horde or squirrelmail but souldn't be surprised if there was one.

Try looking on the nokia website to see if they give any details about programming with their phones that have gsm modems.

Is it actually cheaper for you to have an actual phone rather than using aspsms services?

I've found a cheaper supplier than ASP SMS, which I do find looks a little expensive and I'm not actually sure if they themselves are simply reselling.

The US looks like it gets pretty good mobile deals, and I think I could go cheaper and save money in the long run with some hardware.
