Ok. Here's the story, then I'll tell you the result. Originally, I was redirecting towtalk.net from a remote server to a specific ip and file location: towtalk.net -- http://206.168.97.226/towtalk/forum/ Couldn't get email working. SO I did a custom DNS, towtalk.net is now pointed directly to my machine and at the forum. Then I installed the email server, created an MX record and got all the email working on my server. Problem solved. New problem: The forum is in the webroot/towtalk/forum/ directory. My IP address drops the user right into the webroot. Now, if I create a redirect default.htm page right in the webroot, it moves them right where they need to be, no problem and everything works fine. But I thought I'd get fancy and I made the /towtalk/forum/ the home directory for towtalk.net. I didn't change anything on my machine as to where the forum actually resides. I tested the forum and everything is still there and everything works, except for one thing. Specific forum topics can't seem to remember my password as I try and view a forum topic that require permissions beyond "anyuser". If the topic has ten posts, I have to enter my password ten times! LOL. I am still logged in as a qualified user and I can view anything once I get past the password but once I close it, it doesn't remember that I'm approved to be there and asks me again. What the hell did I do and how do I fix it? Help? I am sure it's simple, I just have no idea where to start. |

I assume you're using some kind of "stealth" technique on your DNS service host to point a domain to a sub-folder URL. That technique isn't a standard DNS capability and will cause the browser to assume it is at a different URL than the server thinks.
It would probably work better to use a virtual domain on your web server called something like "forum.towtalk.net" and point that to the forum subfolder. Then on your DNS server, use a normal A record or CNAME pointer for "forum.towtalk.net". But the way you have it now with the meta refresh pointing to the true forum folder is probably most reliable, except for browsers that don't support meta refresh of course.

Yeah, I been doing a little research since I posted this. I think I'll
leave it the way it is. Seems to be working just dandy. I am installing
the iportalx so things are gonna get changed around a bit. I will
probably do the same thing with that. The DNS points directly to my
webroot folder. I could change it but almost seems like more hassle
than it's worth. Oh, In win2003k, you can right click on the webroot folder and pick a new "drop" folder. That's what I did. So when someone entered towtalk.net, they were redirected once they reached the webroot folder to /towtalk/forum/ and it didn't show in the address bar. I think you are right, the "stealth" technique caused permission problems. Obviously my explanation and technical terms are from the backyard school of computer mechanix and makes more sense to the "layman" LOL I do appreciate your input. |

My mechanic says he always prefers to hear about a car problem from a
woman. They come in and for example, say things like "The front of the
car makes a kaa-kaaa-kong sound when I make a left turn". He knows that
sound is a tie rod. When a guy comes in they say things like "check the brakes", or "It must be the ... " And of course they really don't have a clue -  -------------
