http://www.webwizforums.com/ - Web Wiz Forums version
7.95 has been released today. This new version has a number of security
and bug fixes as well as some new features including the integration of
the soon to be released Web Wiz CAPTCHA image software.
This is the first major release of Web Wiz Forums since last year and the new features and bug fixes include:-
- Web Wiz CAPTCHA software integration
- Extra security for login and registration pages using Web Wiz CAPTCHA image technology
- Support for SMTP Server authentication
- Support for ‘locahost’ SMTP servers
- New International Date function to fix CDate bug that affects some servers
- Improved performance and CDate bug fix for Active Topics page
- CAPTCHA security images now work in ‘Lite’ version
- New Google Ads
- Update to copyright display
- + Many other improvements and bug fixes
As the ADO.Stream object is no-longer required for the running of

security as a number of hackers have been using this object to hack web
sites and installations of Web Wiz Forums.

Thanks Wizmasta!
Now, for the inevitable question. If upgrading a customized forum, which files are necessary to change in order to implement the security fixes. I ask because I am really holding our for v8 before a total re-write of the site.
I have sql v7.92 installed and working fine and would prefer, on your counsel, wait for v8.
What say you wise wizmasta?
(I just don't want to go through this and then in a few months say, "Shucks, I coulda had a V-8." )

I would also like to know the same. Using 7.92 sql version which has been modified by mods and other changes. So will need explicit guidelines about updating from 7.92 to 7.5
And when will V8 come out?

After looking over the files mentioned in the new version history and comparing those to 7.92, it appears that there is a fix in post_message.asp that prevents a recently reported hack vulnerability. So, replacing post_message.asp is probably MOST important, assuming the rest of your forum is not having problems with international dates and emailing and performance. HOWEVER, the new post_message.asp also uses a new "internationalDateTime()" function, so functions/functions_common.asp must also be replaced. The new function is the only change to functions/functions_common.asp.
I just used MS Word to compare the 7.92 to 7.95 files, so I might have missed something. The changes aren't dramatic in how the code looks, but significant in how they secure the forum.
------------- p.s. I'm not affiliated with Web Wiz Guide in any way. I'm just an average Web Wiz user repaying my debt for the use of their fine forum by trying to help other Web Wiz Guide users.

If you just want to patch your forum to prevent the reported hack
vulnerability as JJL surgests, then just changing the following files
should be OK:-
post_message.asp
functions/functions_common.asp
functions/functions_format_post.asp
I've not tested just replacing these files, but from the chnages that I
have made the forum should run without problems by just replacing these
files. (it will certainly patch the vulnerability)

I had a couple of observations and a question. Your change log mentions a file named active_topic.asp AS WELL AS a file named active_topics.asp. However, I am unable to find any file under 7.92 or 7.95 called active_topic.asp (singular). Also, you should indicate that the adds_inc.asp file is located in the include folder.
Note: I only have a few mods but had to restore my old forum since I was getting errors when a user was trying to register for the first time (everything else seemed to work fine).
Finally, could you please give users some control over the CAPTCHA security function. It is a great addition, but for me it is unnecessary given my forums location on an Intranet. Hypothetically, I could see the benefit of having the function present for users at their initial registration (even for an Intranet), but it seems to be too burdensome for someone to have to use every time they login to the system. I know this sounds like heresy to some forum users who have been hacked and are looking for some protection! I am just suggesting that admins be given control over when the security is required as well as whether it is required at all.
Thanks for your hard work.
Great app!!!

Sorry in the rush to patch the forum I made a few mistakes in the version history file which are now fixed.
You can disable the CAPTCHA images by editing the common.asp file nad changing the following variable to false:-
blnLongSecurityCode = true
Chnage to:-
blnLongSecurityCode = false

Const strTxtUniqueSecurityCode = "CAPTCHA Security Code"
Const strTxtEnterCAPTCHAcode = "Please enter the code exactly as shown

The page has been fully tested in SQL Server and your error can not be
replicated. It could be that you have a corrupted file, try reuploading
the files again.
If this doesn't fix the problem, open a new topic with as much detail
as possiable including what version you are upgrading from.

You will need to upload all the files in the CAPTCHA folder then also update the files:-
language_files/language_file_inc.asp
register.asp
login_user.asp
As there is also a security hole patched in version 7.95 you should
consider upgrading your whole forum with the changed files listed in
the version history file.

Hello all,
I had version 7.92 with SQL Server and I made the upgrade to version 7.95 yesterday. I've changed each .asp files mentionned in the history.txt, changed the language file, and there is no script bugs BUT, now, instead of having the current active users, it seems that I have ALL the users connected during the day ! Normally, I have between 20-40 active users a day, but today (french forum), 232 !!!!: Nos utilisateurs ont envoyé 107219 messages dans 6089 sujets dans 23 Forum(s) Dernier message le 20 Octobre 2005 à 18:14 par PAPADISCOU Nous avons 1466 Membres du Forum Le dernier membre enregistré est ilie Actuellement, il y a 232 Utilisateurs actifs Actif, 130 Invité(s) et 102 Membre(s) Membre(s) Actif: boubi, Tony Montana, Diorella, Serge, timi, Pierre77, Willow, chanel, Rico68, bowie, ptibou, Pira, vannii, Mike68, P'tite coquine, Ambre74, lesexshop.ch, Highlife, Thierry K-ko, Divine, toby, pinkutopia, fif2004, verace, dluis00, barthouze, fevasse, Lory, andy, no_name, Carlito's way,

It looks like the wrong file somehow got into the zip file on some
versions, I have now corrected the problem with the active users.
If you downloaded version 7.95 in the last 24 hours download the
following zip file and replace the file
'includes/active_users_inc.asp':-
http://zap2.me.uk/active_users_inc.zip - active_users_inc.zip
Once you update the file users in the active users list will be
removed, one per page view, so it may take 30 minutes for the active
users list to correct itself.

Where do I set this up?
I am using a 3rd party smtp CDOSYS server
Thanks

As I didn't want to do database changes to make upgrade simpler, SMTP
server authentication needs to be done by editing the file:-
functions/functions_send_mail.asp
You will find the following two lines that need to be edited to put in the SMTP server username and password:-
strMailServerUser = "" 'SMTP server username
strMailServerPass = "" 'SMTP server password
Components that support SMTP server authentication are:-
CDOSYS
JMail 4+ (version 3 doesn't support authentication)
ASPemail

The problem is in the international settings of the server, decimal separator of the numbers, dot or comma.

Hi,
First of all thank
you for all your efforts in making your applications even better.
I have downloaded
the new version and I'm currently testing it on my small intranet. Since I have
made some modifications in the past, I still need to check it out before
uploading it to a real website ( http://www.dyxum.com/ - www.dyxum.com ).
So far, so good and
it seems that everything is working just fine. Since I have started using this application
just recently this is my first update and I'm a bit nervous but hopefully
without any reason.
One question, if I disable
the CAPTCHA images for login purposes, (with blnLongSecurityCode = false key)
do I risk any other security problems other than in login stage?
Btw, I just made a payment for link removal, since with this
update I'm sure I will keep this application for awhile.
Thank you.

If you disable CAPTCHA images it won't effect other security things, it
just added protection against remote form hacking to get passwords etc.
The edit post bug is now fixed.

Is there anyway to change this value to remove the security code for the login screen, but leave it for the new user registration screen ... so it is like it was in previous versions of WebWiz?
Setting it to false seems to remove the security code completely from both screens.

If I understand this correctly, the security code was added to the login screen as well as registration? (Haven't gotten to upgrading yet).
In such a case, you would have to edit the login verfication script to remove the security code check. Not that hard.
A better approach to protecting from login attaches is to create a hidden variable that counts the number of login attempts. On a third or fourth (etc.) attempt, the redirect would be to the main default page instead of the failed login page, hence changing the end response for failed login tracted by any claymore style module attempting a login attack. Much simpler, and less obtrusive for legitimate users.

The security images are more to prevent remote form sub mission and
robots from making 1 off sub missions and multiple sub missions.
Hidden form fields would be no good as remote form submission, robots,
etc. can change values in hidden fields, thus getting around such
security blocks.
Cookies would also be no good as these can also be changed and as
sessions variables require cookies these also would also be of no use.
The most secure way to protect against password cracking programs is the security images.

Ah, I see, and a good point, but I would recommend that in administration side you have a setting that can turn off security code based login. (That is, if you haven't already thought of it.) As explained, it is certainly a valuable "option". I can see that some sites might need this, but many might not. Particularly small and personal based forums where the traction for such assaults is minimal to zero.

I posted a problem the other day where an .asp error was being
generated after a user would try to post. I moved the forum back to my
Windows 2003 Server and that problem went away. However I did notice a
problem with the new version.....
On both the Windows 2000 and Windows 2003 Servers, the forums seem to
become unresponsive after making posts. You can reload the forum by
reopening it in the browser, but it hangs right after a post and won't
load the updated forum page. If anyone knows of a tweak I can do with
IIS 6 to stop this, I'd appreciate any suggestions. Otherwise I may
have to go back to ver. 7.90.
Also, some of my users are annoyed by the new CAPTCHA feature and I haven't been able to find a switch to turn it off.
Providing someone can shed some light on the performance issue i'm
having with the new version after posting, I'd appreciate any
instructions on how to disable CAPTCHA for when existing users log in.
(It's fine for registering new users, though.)
Thanks!

It sounds like the errors and speed issues are SMTP server problems.
To test this out disable the email settings in the admin area, if it
speeds up after then the problem is that the SMTP server you are using
is slow to connect to. A 'localhost' SMTP server would be much faster.
The CAPTCHA images can be disabled by editing the common.asp file, I
posted in this topic the other day the exact details on how to do this.

there will be a lot of change within the forum because the forum code is being completely re written for performance.
there is no estimate on a release date, as there is no given exact
amount of time on developement. I can't forsee it being this side of
new year. is one answer i can give.

Oh no...
I've just updated my forum from v7.91 to 7.96 and now I can't access the admin section, it says I don't have authorization .
I looked up my author table and I still have admin group (1) so I don't know why the page is no longer letting me use admin?? What do I do now. Also, before my upgrade users of my forum were reporting an error page coming up after posting message, I saw this too and that's the reason I upgraded, hopefully to fix this. Although an error page is displayed the posting is visible in forum. But users have had enough of seeing this error page.
Can someone please help with my two problems.
THanks heaps.

Could it be that you have moved the location of your database, if so
update both the common.asp files including the one in the admin section
to see if that clears up you admin login issue.
Failing that try reuploading the files again, and/or try logging on
directly to the admin section by pointing your browser at the admin
folder.
Error messages when posting, but the post usually goes through are
usually due to incorrect email settings in the admin section. Check
with your hosting company if they have changed the mail server settings.

Thank you so much. Both issues fixed, firstly I had changed the connection string in the common.asp file in the root directory, but hadn't changed the string in the common.asp file in the admin folder.
Second one was as simple as checking with my Hosting mob and sure as day they had stopped using the email component I had in my forum settings, and now they use ASPEmail, simple.
THanks again.

The error means that your email settings are incorrect.

Little question, I noticed that when a user does a search. It will show hidden forums. They still can't enter these forums but they now have the knowage that they are there and what other users are posting within these hidden forum.
Is there any code change that I can do to change the search to only show the forum that they have permission to access?

this is possible via code but doesnt come in the default version because of the server /processing hit it would have,
there is a MPOD that puts the users access/forum permissions in session
verbles that means it doesnt have to qwuery the database, you could use
this to adapt the saearch query for certain forums.
or you could hard code and do hard coded checks depending on certain permssions.

Thanks, dj air
I will look and see how they have the search setup in the code. I just wanted to see if anyone else has already found a code change to fix the search. Well alway ask since there is no reason to do the same work twice.

I'm not sure what version I have but it's at least 2 years old. Am going to start devoting some time to the site and would like to upgrade the forum....however all this upgrade stuff is mind boggling and am wondering if there is someone out there who does it for a nominal fee?
Thanks Lou

I’m running Web Wiz Forums version 7.7a and would like to update to the new version 7.96, what I would like to know is do I have to update the database or can I simply update some selected files.
Jacksonian: if you are not sure what version you have go to your admin area and look for Check for Updates this will let you know.

If you look at the version history text file contained in the download you should see what was changed since. If I remember correctly, the db was not changed since 7.7 but if so, it should be noted in there.

All 7.x versions have the same database, so backup your database, the replace the ASP files with those from the latest version.

Can you show in a version history page what lines of code were changed... I have completely customized your code for 1year and my code is very different from the original. Having changes with the lines and not just the pages changed will be very helpful

It's a good idea but I just don't have the time.
Documenting every single line change would take as almost as long as writing each line of code.
In version 8 over 250 changes are mentioned, and that's just the changes I got round to adding to the changed log file, I gave up after a while and just listed the pages, which is all of them.
I calculated that I re-wrote 80,000 lines of code. If I where to document each line of code changed would probably take around a year.

I get this same error on my server. I have Windows Server 2003 x64 with SP1.
I have made sure IUSR_servername has full permissions on the entire inetpub structure with no result.
I first thought this was the cause:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/q278013/ - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/q278013/
But I have set the correct permissions on that file.
I have reset all NTFS permissions on the entire system with the default ACL template, without result.
The only thing that makes this problem go away for me is if I make IUSR_servername member of the Administrators group, wich leads me to believe there are still files somewhere in the WINDOWS folder that IUSR needs access to. But what are those files, and why did this suddenly appear? I have another asp site called ASP listpics from IISWorks, and that stopped working too, also complaining about Server.CreateObject Access Error.
I really don't want IUSR to be member of the administrators group...

This means that the upload component is not installed correctly on the server
Checkout the documentation for the upload component you are using.

[/QUOTE]
I have WWG Forums installed on a Win Server 2003 x64 machine and use
AspSmartUpload as the upload utility. The IUSR_ account is set normally
as the anonymous Web user account and does not have Admin privileges.
I don't know which upload utility you are using, but AspSmartUpload has
to be installed correctly in IIS and have NTFS 'write' permissions
enabled for the IUSR_ acct for the uploads folder. Write
permissions must be enabled for the site in the IIS web Properties, and
you must have the Web permissions set to allow scripts. If you install
it according to the documentation it should work properly. Plus the
'uploads' folder in the WWG Forums directory must also have write
permissions enabled at the NTFS level. Additionally, you should also
enable NTFS write permissions for the following accounts: Interactive,
Network, & Network Service. If you installed the Upload utility
properly and installed the server extensions, these accounts should be
listed in the NTFS accounts for the Upload Utility web. If the
Creator_Owner account is listed, delete it. Creator Owner should not be
listed as an NTFS account in any web folder as it has 'no privileges'
set by default.
The only problem I'm having is that users have trouble uploading files
larger than 200k even if the forum configuration is set to allow larger
files. I think this is a bug or limitation with the Upload utility and
not the forum software. I would suggest that additional upload
utilities be added to the forum support or a resident utility be
included in the package. One of the supported utilities is no longer
available, and I've had trouble getting another to work. It seems that
as time passes, our options are becoming more limited.

Usually the upload component has a size limitation of 2Mb although some allow larger uploads. IIS also has a default limitation of 2Mb which would need to be adjusted larger if the upload component allows it.
http is a poor file transfer mechanism- hence the size limitations. If you consistently need to allow uploads larger than 2Mb, you really need to look at an ftp-based app - uses a lot less server resources.
