Hi!

i am not a computer wiz (sorry) so I guess my question will be laughable to most of you guys Smile.

I am working on my company's website. The guy before me, who was in charge of the website, made a colossal mess of the place. I have spent a couple of months getting the chaos into order. Anyway, to get to the point, the web site has two forum: a general (public) one and a private one.
I managed to access and become the administrator of the general one. However, I can't seem to become the administrator of the private one. I need to change the password and username (we change them every 6 months because people have to pay to get into this forum). I tried do ".../default.asp" (that worked on the public one) but it's not working this time.

PLEASE HELP ME! I am so frustrated.

Thanks a zillion,
Robyn Cry

Not sure how "../default.asp" would gain you admin access to a forum, if it does then you have some security issues.

Is the forum system you are using Web Wiz Forums? If not then you are probably best asking this question to the forum makers.

If you are using web wiz forums then which version are you using?

Hi!
Thank you so much for answering.
Firs: Yes, I am using web wizforums (it would be pretty silly of me to post here if I wasn't, right? Big smile). The version I have is 7.9a Lite (i also accessed this site by the link on the bottom of the forum pages).

Second: when I entered "...default.asp" I reached the login page, where I could login as an administrator (the other guy left me the username and password). That's what I meant. Just accessing the page didn't make me the admin, but it got me to where I needed to sign in as the admin.

The thing is, my employer and the people who use the site are all pretty computer illiterate, so they dumbed down the forum options. They even totally stopped using the admin option in both forums and everyone just posted messages as guests, to avoid the "mix-up" of registering and such. (I find this incredibly silly, but that's just me). As I said, I got the admin going in the public forum, now just the private one's a mess. So I think that they also must have somehow (if it's possible) deleted the admin option in the private forum. Is that possible?

Thanks a lot for your help and please let me know what to do now?

to gain access to the private one i take it you mean board system not actual forum (one forum like maillinglist forum)?

if so you need to open the database and reset the username and password to the default ones found in a new downloaded version.

you need to copy over the password and salt value.

Hi again...

Okay, I am confused. Confused

I'm so sorry for being dense, but how do I do all these things???

The forum is not a mailinglist. It is a posting forum, like the one here. The only difference is that you need to enter a username and password to access it and there are 3 different forums in it. Would it help if I posted the link to the forum?

Thanks
Robyn

A link may help.

But from reading your posts am I right in thinking that you have the admin username and password, but you do not have the passwords to enter?

If this is the case to remove the password from a forum login into the admin section and under the page you setup forums on your can remove the password to the forum.

If on the otherhand you have lost the admin username and password and you need to reset it, then you will need to download a new copy of the Access version of the forum, open the database, open the table tblComments, then copy and paste over the password and salt fields for the admin account from the new database to your own database. This will tehn reset the admin password.

I see I'm probably not being very clear.

The prblem is not that I don't have the admin username and password (although i don't). The prblem is accessing a page where I need to enter them. There's no place to enter the admin username and password and thus enter the admin's account.

By the way, sorry for being stupid but what is salt?

I am posting the link to the website:
http://www.thelearningsociety.com - www.thelearningsociety.com
and then you go to the forum which is
http://www.thelearningsociety.com/en/forum/index.aspx - http://www.thelearningsociety.com/en/forum/index.aspx

and then you enter the forum with the username (society) and password (forum21) we give to people who pay to use. But where would I put te admin username and password?
You see, the reason I need all this is to change the password. How can I do that if I am not the admin?

Sorry again for being such an idiot. Wink
I'm not really this stupid. I'm just new at this website thing.

I really appreciate all your help.

Hi.

Thanks for your help, but there is no such page. :-(

Oh, well. I think I'll just get someone to come over and help me. :-)

Thanks again for all your help. Maybe this password is't even forum related. I think it may be just a passowrd to a pge, and not a member login.

Thanks,
Robyn

Not really! i myself am a newbie at thisLOL

ne way ... NO would be the answer to your question as I understand you are talking about the Username & Password asked when open the link to the main forum page in a seperate Windows Login window. Because in my best knowledge that is set from IIS (Internet Information Server) on a webpage. If you have the administrative rights of the webspace you have you may remove it, if not then call the web hosting company and ask them to do so.

now the admin area you reached, it has forum settings from there after removing username password, u can set passwords to access the forums only, not the defalt.asp file, then set the forum permissions for registered users only so that no guests can post, view or do anything in them.

that i think sums up almost everything. still not sure what to do, simply post the query. if not me someone else will get u out of this.
