Hey can anyone help, I got a new 500GB internal hard drive but am having trouble plugging it in, im not very good at hardware stuff!

At the moment I have a CDR, DVD, 40GB HD and the secondary slave is free.

So I opened the computer up, slid the HD in the slot, and tried changing the jumper switches to various combinations listed, but didnt know which one because none were called secondary slave.

Did I plug it in right and all?  I got that long ribbon that goes into the 40gb HD, and then continues on and I plugged it in the 500gb, i couldnt see any other cable.

I tried putting the jumpers on cable select as well but no luck, any clues?

Oh I think I got it now, had to tweak it's settings in computer management and give it a partition

Yes, if you have 2 HDs, the one that boots the computer will be your master and the other one the slave.

You said you tap into the ribbon of the old HD, that's fine, but carefull as your new HD will be much faster then the old one and since you are using it's ribbon you are effectively reducing the speed of the new HD to work as fast [read/write - push/pull] as your old one.

Motherboards usualy come with 2 IDE slots on them, you could use the 2nd slot for you new HD, but you probably are using it for your CDR, DVD etc.

If I were you, I would bin the old 40 GB HD, and keep only 1 drive, you save power, problems and noise, but you'll have to install Windows on the new drive.

i dont really recommend using PATA or master/slave setup when using high capacity high performance drives. Get a SATA hard disk or invest in a PCI to IDE card. They run for $15 - $20 bucks only. This way you can add the SATA capability to you pc if it wasnt there already.. or increase the number of PATA-IDE ports

you dont have to re-install anything, just use something like norton ghost to take the *complete* contents of the smaller drive onto te larger one...

but scientist is right, with that much difference in capacity it'll likely slow things down... to start with, set the jumper so that it is slave OR secondary (whichever it is called), then create 2 (or more) partitions on the larger drive, one of them 40gb (to match the old one and make a ghost easier)...

then just use ghost (or something like it) to image the old drive to the new small partition. Once that's done, turn the comp off, pull out the old drive and set the new one to master...

both have a disk image program for download... no idea about how well either of them work, but they both seem to be what you need...

one more thing: is the cable you have a high speed ide cable, or one of the old ones? 80-pin or 40-pin... if you don't know what they look like, 40-pin has wires that are about the thickness of the wires if a floppy drive cable, 80-pin is the same width ribbon, same  plug, but much tinner wires... If it's a 40-pin, you should probably get an 80-pin from your local, because there's nothing better at killing performance than an old ide cable..
