I had my host provider create a private folder that is inaccessible through IIS.  I think they just created a folder within the root of my actual web space, and then locked the permissions down (i.e., C:\inetpub\WEBSITE.COM\private).  Now, when I try to administer the forum using the administrator account, clicking Admin, I get the following error:

Provider error '80040e4d'

Authentication failed.

/admin/common.asp, line 178

I can login fine with a regular and administrator account and create and edit posts.  But when I try to access the administrative settings, I get an error.  I think the correct method is to put it in a folder above the actual web space (i.e., C:\inetpub\private\WEBSITE.COM, vs. above)  Just trying to make things secure here.  Thanks!

ask them to make a folder with

"read/write access" and above the root folder so it is not accessable though the web browser.

but can be accessed by your applications

My guess is that you modified the forum/common.asp, but you didn't modify forum/admin/common.asp. They both should have identical physical paths to the MDB. The fact that you can log in and create and edit posts indicates the read/write permissions are not the problem.

FYI, "C:\inetpub\WEBSITE.COM\private" probably IS above your webspace because your "webspace" is probably something like "C:\inetpub\WEBSITE.COM\wwwRoot". Web browsers can directly access files only in the www root folder, so "private" is fairly secure.

JJLatWebWiz,

You were right, I had simply forgotten to un comment remove the ' in front of the strDbPathAndName = line in the admin/common.asp.  Doh!  Once I took care of that, I was able to administer the forum just fine.

Thanks!
