Version 8 does work under mySQL with the myODBC 3.51 driver.

I'm hoping to have a beta version, of version 8 out within the next month, but that all depends on how much time I get to finish coding it and if anything takes longer than expected.

Things usualy go quite on this site over Christmas and the New Year, so hopefully I should get quite a bit of coding done then.

Hi - I'm glad to see that you're developing the forum now to work under mySQL .... if I were to set up the forum using a flat database initially and then 'upgrade' once V8 is available ... how straightforward will it be to convert the forum across to mySQL ?!

Thanks in advance Smile

I've never tried converting a database to mySQL so I couldn't guess, also the version 8 database is very different to the present database.

mySQL now fully works with version 8 and I have even written a file that creates the mySQL database (this is how I got the mySQL database to test the forum on).

Version 8 has had every single file re-written and because recordsets paging, international format dates, etc. are used very little needed to be changed for the forum to work with mySQL. Only 3 table fields needed to be added or changed for the convention.

On a small database the loading times where around the same as with the SQL Server version. Not sure though how it would handle under a heavy load.

As mySQL is cheaper than SQL Server I plan on using the mySQL server version for this site, so when this will give me an idea of how easy or difficult it will be to migrate from one database to another.

Thanks for that. I'm thinking that I may stick with the MS SQL option which is already available under 7.x ... however, when do you think V8 will be available for download? Cheers Kerry

Hi - I'm pleased to see from your blog that Version 8 Beta is due to be available today! Great news (although it looks like you missed all of Christmas because of it!!)

I'm trying to decide whether to set up a new forum using V7 with MSSQL and then upgrade to V8 once it has a final release, or whether to set up now using the V8 Beta? If I set up using V7 MSSQL and then upgrade will it be a relatively straightforward process or do you think I'm liable to have less hassle if I simply install the Beta version from the start?!

Thanks
Kerry

The answer at the moment is that I don't know, as I don't know what other database changes there will be before version 8 final, but there will be other db changes to support a calander and gallery tools I'm probaly will add.

I can't tell from the above posts whether the "upgrade tool" that Borg has on this site converts from Access to mysql, or simply updates the databse with new tables, etc.

And one of the posts says "use this tool" to convert, but there is no link. I want to upgrade from Access version 7.01 to the lateset 8 version and switch to mysql. Our server is ready. What do I need to know?

The upgrade tool only upgrades the database you already have, it doesn't convert to a new database type.

There are a number of users who have converted to mySQL from Access.

If you have a look in the version 8 forum some people have posted their experience of converting to mySQL.

You will first need to upgrade your present Access database to version 8.
