Does anyone have any thoughts about the feasabilty or desirability of running WWF under Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express?  Also, is it true that SQL 2000 Develoer Edition and MSDE have a limit of 5 activley concurrent connections?  What does this mean for "real world" conncurrent usage of WWF based on these editions, and does that same limit apply to Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition?

Web Wiz Forums runs fine under both MSDE and SQL Server 2005 Express.

This forum you are presently on and the rest of this site currently run on 1 MSDE database without any problems, with further throttling done to keep the amount of memory MSDE uses to under 100Mb, and still most forum pages process in under 0.05 secounds.

Both MSDE and 2005 Express will run Web Wiz Forums fine, the limitation on concurrent users on MSDE will not effect performance as websites tend to have 1 username under which it connects to the database, this means that websites only require 1 concurrent user.

The only reason why I use MSDE and not SQL 2005 Express for this site, is that there are limitations on 2005 Express that make backing up the database to my office server more difficult.

If we have a decent web server, will installing Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express on the same server cause performance problems?  We are running many dozens of websites, including a fairly busy website using WWF.

We are currently using a dedicated web server and a shared Microsoft SQL 2000 database on another computer and we are trying to eliminate the shared MS SQL Server either by switching to MySQL or MS SQL Server 2005 Express.  Moving to MS SQL Server 2005 Express is more tempting since we wouldn't have to convert existing MS SQL code to MySQL.

Also, would upgrading to the Standard MS SQL Server 2005 be something easy to do if we decide to later go that route?

Whatever solution we use must work with Web Wiz Forums 8.x.

Suggestions?

This site uses an MSDE database on the same server.

Currently there are 100 sites on the server, and this site has over 500,000 hits per day.

The MSDE database for this site is 80Mb in size and MSDE uses 250Mb if you let it but due to memory limitations I throttle this down to 100Mb so that it doesn't use to much memory.

I would imagine that SQL 2005 Express would preform pretty much the same way MSDE does on this site.

Moving from MSDE to any other version of SQL 2000 and 2005 is simple with DTS, but with SQL 2005 Express MS have placed limtations into it for moving database to other versions of SQL server, so I would check it out with Microsoft. This is the reason why I am sticking with MSDE at the moment.

You would think that they would make it easy to upgrade to a paid version....

Their website was kinda confusing about that so I will have to do some more digging.  But that does let me know what I need to know.  Thanks.
