In browsers that support CSS 2 max-hieght is used in the CSS file to fix the size of avatars. This works in most browsers except IE which doesn't yet support the CSS style. This isn't a major problem as it sounds as on pages like this page if an avatar is to large the fixed tables in IE will mean a large avatar won't mess up the page formatting, but will mean not all the avatar is displayed in IE.
