Subject: Odd login problem...

Last night I logged into WWF (7.96) to modify a couple of board descriptions.  No problem.  While still logged in, I went for a coffee.  When I came back, I was logged out.  This was about a 3 minute time frame.

When I logged back in as admin, it told me that my login was successful and I was being transferred back to the forums.  Which it did.  The problem is that I wasn't really logged in.  I was still a guest, and the "register" and "login" buttons were still showing.  I tried numerous times, and I tried going to /admin to login with the same effect.

I'm pretty sure I haven't been hacked, and nothing else was changed on the forums except a couple of board descriptions.  I thought about copying the password and salt back from the original database, but the problem is not that I can't log in, it's that I can log in but then I'm really not.  Starting to sound like Dr. Seuss, isn't it.

Has anyone had this problem, or know what might be causing it.  I'm the only admin, and I really don't want to have to start from scratch.  Thanks...

*Edit:  I've also discovered that no one else can log in, or I should say they can log in but they're not really logged in, and I can register as a new user and it says everything went okay, but still not logged in.

This sounds like a cookie issue.

Make sure that your site is setting cookies correctly.

Try using Firefox for testing as it is much better at handling cookies and viewing data in saved cookies. This should help track down the problem.

@boRg:  Thanks for the quick reply.  I had finally tracked it down to a cookie problem and was able to get back in, it's just odd it hadn't happened till now.  And I'm still not sure what caused it.  Next time I know where to look first.  I have the latest FireFox installed, I'll have to start using it for testing.

I've really been enjoying setting up Web Wiz, it has a lot of nice features and it's very easy to mod code.  Very well written and well documented.  Wish I could purchase another license to replace SMF on another site, but it won't handle ASP.

I'm also anxious to see what version 8 will have, but not looking forward to re-modding code.  Anyway, very nice work.  And thanks again for the reply...

I have a user with the same issue, except it only happens with Firefox. I checked his cookies and they are enabled, as is Javascript. I manually added my site to accept cookies, but still did not work.

I always get reports about login problems ever now and then. I've never been able to figure out what's causing them. I always tell them its cookies, but many times that doesn't work.

The present version of the forum users cookies to login users, if for whatever reason cookies don't want to work, then the user gets login issues.

Version 8, with it's cookie-less sessions should prevent login issues for users, if the user can not be tracked with cookies, then session strings are used instead.

I hope to test this new feature out on this site later this week, when I will ask users to try using the forum with cookies disabled in their browsers.
