Ok, let me preface this post first by saying I am not expecting ANY official support on this question!! I realize I'm asking about a a beta test version of software. I'm just wondering.
Has anyone else installed the Microsoft Internet Explorer 7 beta yet? I installed it, then had to uninstall it. For some reason it does not like the Web Wiz Forums, nor the Web Wiz HTML editor. It doesn't refresh the screen when you delete or move text. It's really wierd, and it's not just my website. It did it here too. Normal textarea boxes work just fine. I'm guessing something in the Javascript isn't playing nice with the browser at this stage.
Has anyone else tried it? And if so, has anyone figured out what causes that? My only fear is that they'll release IE 7 and that will be a permenant bug.
Again, by no means am I expecting an official reply. Just wondering.

If you can let me know where I can get a copy of IE 7 beta from then I will test this to see if this issue can be fixed, or findout why it is occuring.

I can write programmes (.exe files) and from what you are describing and basic Google searched it appears that Microsoft has entirely recoded the browser control, including text areas.... This may be conflicting with RTE's. I will try and find out some more info.

I've had a quick play around with IE7 now, and it seems at first glance to be much better than previous versions (much more compliant)
I've checked the Web Wiz RTE (not the forum one yet) and it seems to be working OK for many items, but now that they have cleaned up the code, etc. produced by the built in IE RTE API, it looks like I will have to make a few changes for IE7, to change or remove some or all of the work arounds I had to implement to get around all the bugs that IE 6 had.

I must take back my last comment.
On using IE7 a bit more it's still as buggy as ever and it's RTE API still produces some of the worst HTML code I have ever seen. It's now even worse!!
On the Web Wiz RTE it uses slightly different code to the RTE for this forum, and it seems some sort of bug in IE RTE API means that for some reason often the contents of the RTE is displayed incorrectly and updates incorrectly on this forum.
I hope this is a bug that IE will sortout, otherwise work arounds maybe hard to develop.

Judging by the amount of complaints on the internet from doing Google Searchs that it is most likely an IE bug.
We will just have to wait. But for now I am sticking with Firefox

The problem with the RTE working isn't a compliants issue, but more an intermitent bug.
It seems that when you type in IE into the WYSIWYG Editor for this forum the display often goes blank, or it doesn't update correctly.
However, if you sumbit the input you find that what you have typed has actauly been entered.
So it seems to be some sort of display bug within IE that is effecting the RTE.

FWIW, this bu sounds familiar. I'm sure I ran into the same thing a few years back when I was making my own rte within an app. Fixing it I think it had something to do with setting a property for the browser object and for some reason I think it might have had something to do with flushing buffers or encoding.
Not a lot of help I know, but there might be something about it in the KB.

IE7 is definitely buggy.
If you use it be sure to use it in standalone mode. I had to remove it after using it. I'll wait for the bugs to be removed before using it again.
For using in standalone, try this:
Download the IE7 Beta 1 Install from MSDN
Open the install file with http://www.rarlab.com/download.htm - WinRAR (yep, it's an EXE, but it's a self extracting EXE) and extract them to a folder. Alternatively, you can just run the EXE, make a copy of the files which are extracted in the first step, and cancel the install. I was too chicken to do this on my work computer.
Look in the folder you extracted to for the file SHLWAPI.DLL. Delete this file.
Create a new text file in the folder, then rename it to IEXPLORE.exe.local.

Thanks for taking a look at this guys. I realize it's a beta version of IE.
The only thing I can add after playing around some more is that the issue looks like it lies somewhere in the Javascript. A regular HTML textarea box works just fine. If you take the RTE's onload command out of your script, even though the RTE won't work of course, the text box is fine. So it looks like there must be a command in the Java that the new IE doesn't seem to jive well with in text refreshing.
If you scroll your page up and down, or wait 10 seconds or so the box will refresh and the text will line up.

Until Microsoft sort out the issues with IE7, I am currently disabling the RTE editor for IE7 users in Web Wiz Forums v8.
Hopefully they will fix the issue for the final version of IE7, but if they do not I will look for a workaround at that time.

There are some weird things in IE7 beta2 (although many are coz they're trying to fix their sins from previous versions). I've found the redraw problem occurs less often in WWF RTE ver2.
Strangely ye olde htmlarea 3 (from dynarch et al.) doesn't seem to have the problem at all yet must surely be using basically the same IE functions (hmmm, notice that system is a bit slow so mebbe their re-draw is different some how).
First post, so I have to thank Bruce for such good forum system

From looking at a few other glitches I think it has something to do with IE7b2 handling of iframes.

Do any of you know if MS is looking into fixing these issue?
I hope so, otherwise I will be spending nights banging my head against the wall trying to find a solution, while continuly coursing Microsoft for making such crap, buggy, browsers.

Hi all, and especially Borg (Bruce).
I asked Microsoft about this problem and they answered me.
My question:
Subject: A bug in IE 7 (WYSIWYG doesn't work)
There is a bug in IE 7. I will provide you with URL to the topic of the forum, that explains this bug. The WYSIWYG is not working in IE 7.

I am wondering if you will fix this bug, which causes a big problem to users of forums that use rich text editors.
Microsoft's answer:
Hello,
Thank you for contacting Microsoft Customer Service.

What a very nice way of passing the buck and not doing anything.
This is pretty much the usual reply from Microsoft, which is why reporting anything to them is a complete waste of time.
Looks like also a few people have reported this issue in the newsgroups that you link to in your post.

Apparently newer builds of IE7 beta 2 have fixed the re-draw issue with the browser, but at the moment I can not confirm this as web wiz guide is moving offices over the next few weeks and don't have any test machines available at this time to load the newer builds of IE7 beta 2 on.

Gotcha, do you just have a variable toggle in the code? If so, I'd be happy to turn it on again and test it for you.

In version 8 you can enable it by editing the file 'functions/functions_common.asp' at line 164 you will find the follwoing:-
'ElseIf CInt(Trim(Mid(strUserAgent, CInt(inStr(1, strUserAgent, "MSIE", 1)+5), 1))) >= 6 Then ElseIf CInt(Trim(Mid(strUserAgent, CInt(inStr(1, strUserAgent, "MSIE", 1)+5), 1))) = 6 Then
Remove the line shown in blue, then remove the single quote on the first line (quote shown in red)

Bruce, great news! It works fantastically. At least in my tests I was able to perform every RTE function (with the exception of uploading - darn host) without any problems.

Thanks for getting back to me.
It sounds good, but the actual issue wasn't the RTE working, but the RTE area wouldn't always update correctly.
EG, you would delete some text, but the text still appeared to be in the RTE area.
Could you possibly check this for me and let me know if they ahev fixed this?

Gotcha, I've added blocks of text and deleted them. RTE updates with my input. I'm not seeing any delays, ghosting, or residual text. Deleting from the middle of a paragraph worked. Deleting one line of text was perfect. Deleting a character from a word worked. Deleting text from the middle of a sentence and then typing more text in worked as well.
Let me know if this is what you were refering to.
Thanks.
