I am not sure how much junk mail this would actually prevent, I still get loads of junk in my physical mailbox so I guess they don't mind to pay a few cents to deliver their ads.

Don't think it will prevent any junk mail. Just ensure that valid email accompanied by cash doesn't go through the junk filters.

The sad thing is that I believe many companies will sign on for this. I've seen a lot of AOL/Yahoo instructions for how to whitelist an email on some very large corporate sites.

It's a principle of business that it costs more to get back a lost customer than to get a new one and keeping an existing custome is a pittance compared to getting a new one. If you were Ford, or Panasonic, or Barclays Bank - or even Paypall, it would just make good business sense to ensure that your customer communications get through.

I agree with that. Larger companies that actually have something to loose will consider something like this.

Something like this should be done on a more general scale though, more like a central location where those "safe" originators are housed. But then again who would get that money :)
