What is the best approach for dealing with a high amount of people searching with a very large database?

what dbms do You have in mind?
 
But, generally a fulltext-index speeds things up ..... only one disadvantage. The size of the index.....will end up to about the same size as the whole table

If FT Index is not an option it makes quite a difference how you index you tables in general. You can also create archive tables with posts older than x weeks, searching only the new ones initially and give the option to search old ones later...
