when the final version of wwforum version 8.0 will be released ??? Wink

I'm hoping to have the final version released around Easter time, or at least a Release Candidate version.

But it all depends on how many bugs come to light in the present beta 2 version and feedback from users on improvements that cane be made.

I should have more of an idea in a few weeks time.

I still need to update the Forum Help section with a bit on how to use the new Calendar System.

So far Version 8 Beta 2 has had 149 downloads in 24 hours, which isn't to bad.

So, I'm guessing from the lack of posts of people reporting bugs that most of the bugs in beta 1 have been addressed and that Beta 2 is a stable release.

Please post any feedback, both positive and negative so that I can get a general idea of how things are going.

Don't know if this has  to do with just me or the forum itself:

The XML page cannot be displayed

Cannot view XML input using XSL style sheet. Please correct the error and then click the javascript:location.reload%28%29 - Refresh button, or try again later.

Access is denied. Error processing resource 'http://forums.webwiz.net/css_styles/rss_XLST_style.xsl'.

Thanks JCH2, the RSS Feed from the page does work, and the XLST style sheet works in both IE7 and Firefox, but the present XSLT style sheet was a bit of a rush job to get it included in the beta 2 release.

I going to be witting a complete new one for the final version as soon as I finish the chapter on XLST in my XML book.

Don't you worry, I have been picking through this beta version (Access and MSSQL) with a fine tooth comb and am yet to find any errors lol...

The only problem i can see is what exactly are the poor mod builders gonna have left to do?

I've found the following bug when 'mass mailing the admin group' from the Admin CP:

Microsoft VBScript compilation error '800a0411'

Name redefined

/forum80/admin_member_mailier_send.asp, line 68

Dim strForumEmailAddress     'Holds the forum email address
----^

If you correct this by commenting it out (not really correcting, I know), you get the same error on the following two DIMs:
Dim strMailComponent          'Holds the mail component to use
Dim strMailServer     'Holds the mail server

They are already defined in admin_common.asp, which is included in the admin_member_mailier_send.asp
By the way, is that file supposed to be name admin_member_mailIer_send.asp?
The other file is named admin_member_mailIer.asp as well, so is it the same typo twice or is mailier actually an English word I don't yet know?

1. for starters as i read this topic thru to page 2 i wanted to post a reply at the end of the thread. after hitting the "post reply" button it took me to the login screen which i logged in.

-after the successful login it shot me back to the main forum.

-wouldve been nice to have kept me at the same point i was at before having to log in.

-this helps people not have to find the thread they were reading.

just installed v8.2 and was wondering when the final version of 8 comes out is it just a matter of replacing files, or will there be a sql script to upgrade database also????

the reason I ask is because I am using v8.2 as the forum on my website (as of today), i was previously using version 7.9. and i found no script in the download of 8.2 for upgrading the database so i pretty much am starting from scratch again with a new database.

no biggie i only had 5 posts and 2 members so starting over from scratch wasnt a problem, but i dont want to do this again in the future.

last question,

i really like the calendar feature but found limitations/restrictions..

-is there a way to post events with out having to post a thread???

i would like to use the calendar as a calendar of event for my community site.

example: an event occurs the first saturday of every month, i would like to set this event one time  for the whole year and not have to repost every month.

oldgym, an 7.x to 8 upgrade tool will be available for the final release, but read the beta test program text carefully as it does state not to run the beta versions on live sites, one of the reasons for this is that there will be no upgrade path between beta versions.

I'm waiting to hear feedback from users on the Calendar System to decide what changes need to be made to it, it maybe necessary cessicary to make database changes in order to accommodate the changes, which is why you may not be able to upgrade from a  beta version.

actually i spoke too soon, lastnight i was pending my hosting company to install the database to my live site. this morning as i tested i was not able to log into the admin section of the forum.

i left the log in as the default "administrator" "letmein". when i attempt to log in to the admin section i get the same error i have been getting with version 7.9

Error: Only members with sufficient permission can access this page.

A security error has occurred with authentication.
Please ensure that JavaScript is enabled in your web browser, and you are not using a saved or cached copy of the page.

Yet, on the top, it says I'm logged in as the administrator. iget this error no matter what browser or comuter im using. you can try it too just go to northshore.com/forum

Ive had this problem with 7.9 and i was hoping that 8.2 which is cookie less would solve the issue. Its got to be somethig with my hosting environment because this app runs fine on my local HD.

ive investigated the following suggestions by borg..
1. An ASP file on your site uses session.abandon
2. The sites application pool keeps rcycling
3. You are using load balanced servers
4. You are using a win2003 server app pool farm
5. You are using an unpatched win2003 server (win2003 origianly had a bug when it was released and the ASP session kept being dropped)

and none seems to be an issue.

im so frustrated becasue i totally love this forum, i tried snitz, vbulletin, itcn.com and yet webwiz beats them all out..

oh well

Luckly for you I have already thought of this situation and v8 beta 2 also has support for load balanced web servers and web gardens, which should also fix your problem.

1. Open the file 'functions/functions_session_data.asp'
2. Set the variable 'blnDatabaseHeldSessions' to True:-

Const blnDatabaseHeldSessions = True

This will then mean that all session handling data is stored to the database instead of in the web servers memory.

Also in v8 beta 2 for extra security you need to re-login to the Adim Control Panel through the file 'admin.asp' as a completely different, more secure login system is used for the admin area.

Hey Borg that seemed to fix the issue on my live server with forum v 8.2, now I know it is possible for me to use webwiz forums!! yipppeeee!!

as for 7.9 version this simple fix does not apply so i will just need to wait for the final release of 8. in the mean time 7.9 is not working so i will be forum-less for a while.

At the moment feedback is really positive for beta 2 with only a handful of minor bugs reported and no-one up in arms demanding new features to be added.

If nothing else crops up this week I'm hoping that I can update the beta 2 version (with the few bug fixes) to Version 8 RC1 (release candidate) next week, for running on live web servers.

Although not a warn system as I wanted something more generic Beta 2 allows the admin and moderators to enter notes about the user when you edit a persons profile.

These notes are then displayed to admin and moderators in the users profile.

This can be used as a warn system as you can enter notes, such as the number of warnings you have given that user.

BETA 2 DON't SUPPORT LARGE TEXTS

for example can't store message with 20000 byte lenght

The size the post is only limited by how much data the ASP Response Object can hold.

When you post a form to a web server the ASP Response object handles the data.

The ASP Response Object can only handle 100Kb of data, this data includes, form post data, browser headers, cookie data, etc. so the size of your post depends on all these factors.

In normal use this is never an issue as people generally don't want to post complete novels as posts.

Does that mean that you'll provide an upgrade from 7.9x to 8.0 RC1?

To: JansonSGN, yes, i DO believe, that Borg will provide the upgrade tool from 7.x to 8.0 as he told many times before.
Just few guys like me, take alot of time, to convert all the mods from 7.x to 8 and it's really a hard work for a noob like me :(

namtoday,

Thanks for the info. I know that borg planned an upgrade tool for the final version of 8.0 but was wondering if one would be provided for RC1 since he mentioned that it could be used for live servers.

I've been working on an upgrade tool most of the morning for the SQL Server version.

I hoping to have Version 8 RC1 released next Monday with an Access and SQL Server beta upgrade tool.

The Upgrade tool will only be a Beta version so I would have to advise caution in using it and only use it on a non-production server backed up database.

Please let us know as soon as RC1 is ready. The site we are working with is on 7.9 and having huge traffic related slowdowns once over 100 active users are on it. We did some traces within SQL 2005 and it's just getting hit with 1000's of DB Queries...

thanks!

Web Wiz Forums version 8.0 RC1 will be released tomorrow, Tuesday 21st of March 2006.

Upgrade tools for Access and SQL Server will be available, but these will be beta upgrade tools, so I would not advise using them on a live database in case there are some issues with them. I have tested them on a range of different databases, but you never know what effect varying systems may have.
