Is the Calendar just for birthdays or can other events be added to it?

Events can be added to it.

You need to give users permissions to create events when creating a new topic in forums.

If you select 'Hide Birthdays' in the drop down box on this site you will see I have entered a couple of events in the Calendar System on this site.
