Is it possible to Convert a Ms Access Db (from  version 7.x)  to a MySQL Db (version 8)?

Posted By: WebWiz-Bruce
Date Posted: 21 March 2006 at 12:07pm
There isn't a tool to do this, but MS Access has an Upsize Tool for moving databases from Access to SQL Server.

It is a bit hit and miss, so you just have to try different ways of using the tool till you find one that works for you.

Adrina,

You can always upgrade your access database from 7.9x to 8 and use my tool to http://forums.webwiz.net/forum_posts.asp?TID=18490&PID=100978#100978 - convert from access to mysql

Hi Borg,
thanks for your wonderful work.

There is a little problem after converting Access DB from 7.92 to 8: e-mail address in profile view is shown: mailto:ldangel2%40ford%2Ecom -

myname%40mydomain%2Ecom

and not

myname@mydomain.com

I don't know if it is an issue about RC1 or conversion tool.

Thank you again for all.

Hi VBScript, would you happen to have an access to SQL conversion script also?

Thanks in advance!

Another issue:

On my forum I have a non ladder group, named "staff", flagged as moderator group in all forums.
The members of this group, after conversion, are not able to view edit, hide and delete buttons in all messages.
On 7.92 all is ok.

Permissions may need to be reset after the update.

It does say this while updating, but I guess I need to make it more obvious

A new permissions engine is used on version 8 and permissions will not carry over, so default permissions are set for everyone.

I am afraid I do not have an access to MSSQL application. I tried for several days to research MSSQL databases and how to convert it but I am afraid I did not get very far.

Sorry about that, if I find anything  I will let you know

Ok, my fault, I didn't read... Wink

I don't understand why after conversion I see the permission table reflecting the permissions before conversion.

I tried to remove moderation rights to the "staff" group, and apply again, but it doesn't work.

How can I reset all permissions and apply again?

Thanks a lot

I have a question about using the conversion tool, there is an arcade mod I added to my forum... Will that carry over? Actually, I'm not worried about the fact that game scores will get lost, but I'm worried that the DB wolud crush.

It all depends if the arcade mod uses table column names the same as those in the new database.

AS I don't know of this mod, the best thing to do is back-up your database and give the upgrade ago. If you get know errors it's fine, if you get errors the error message should give you a clue as to what column names are conflicting, and so need to be removed from the database.

Info_Tech

if your talking about AirHeads Arcade mod on Breath of Air,
then it wont "upgrade" the arcade, but, theres nothing to "upgrade" database wise in the Arcade Mod, though Aaron will need to update the arcade to comply with the new Skining system, i believe hes waiting for the forum to be offically released before he upgrades it (incase of any skinning changes)

if its another arcade mod - then sorry, i dont know Confused

Yes I'm using AirHead's Arcade mod. I hope it will get updated to match the new version settings. People like it a lot, they have already scored above 59,000 in that Air Fox game..lol

I hope that the mod will get amended so we can use it in version 8 of webwiz forums because I will upgrade to the new version anyways.

Speaking of database backup, I am confused as to which method to use to back up my forum database. On the Microsoft website they state that I do a right-click on the db I want to backup and then back it up using Enterprise Manager like shown here:
Figure 9: Backup database through Enterprise Manager
At first, I used the Import and Export Data method assuming that it's the right way of doing it and I set the option to back it up to 'Local' ...the problem is i don't know where on my computer the back up was stored...
Should I use the http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/sql/2000/maintain/sqlbackuprest.mspx#EMMAC - backup method that Microsoft suggests?

I've not tried Microsofts method but I usually install SQL Server locally (or MSDE), create a blank database on it, then use the import/export DTS tools to export the database to my locally installed SQL Server database.

Ok cool, I have done that... One last question before I go ahead and convert the db... Should I wait for the final release or is it okay to use RC1 and then update when the full version is released?

I have just released version 8 RC1.1 which fixes a few issues with the RC1 release.

Most issues with version 8 should now be sorted out ready for the final release at Easter.

You need to start a new topic and include the actual error message, not just the IE generic page can not be displayed.

Will the MsSQL database run directly under MySQL. I´m planning an upgrade here, and I might as well skip the MsSQL and go for MySQL insted. But I cant see anything which need to be converted etc.

mySQL is very different to SQL Server.

There are tools available on the mySQL site for database conversion, but you would need to upgrade to the version 8 database first.

Regards to the arcade mentioned

it uses the existing database structure and inserts new values.

i have almost changed the arcade to work with V8, i just need to do the arcade edit games page and a few bugs.

to upgrade the arcade the best way or way you can do it is to just change the names of the table prefixs of the V7 to the V8 prefix and add 2 fields to the author table and 1 to the Common.asp file.

as i said all you have to do is copy the tables over

I assume that it will only be a problem if we added a column with the same name as a column you are adding, correct?

Will it leave our columns alone as long as they don't have the same name as yours?

Another question:  Will this tool upgrade from any version 7.x or is there a minimum version number (i.e. 7.5x)?  Based on the name, I assume it supports everything from 7.0x to 7.9x.  Am I correct?  Or would I need to do multiple upgrades like we've had to do in the past?

It will work on all version 7.x databases as the tables and columns remained the same for all version 7.x databases.

Where did they go?  or, does the final version 8 automatically update the old database?

Hi, I just figured out why this error has occured when upgrading from 7.9x to 8.0. There is a new directory named /database in the 8.0 version and it must be modified in order for the upgrade to work.

Hi boRg, could you also maybe add a line in the 7 to 8 upgrade kit that "the file in the /database directory must be updated" in order for the version 8 to work"

Very nice job

Thank you very much

Ok, non DB issue... and I have not tried the upgrade yet.

I have custom images, graphics, and colors which I assume will be lost (or at least have to be reconfigured) when I move from 7.96 to 8... is that correct? Is there a way to overlay those old custom files with the new ones?

This is not a huge issue in my book just a longer upgrade process if there is no way of doing it.

Most of the graphics and images remain the same, but with some new ones added.

The skins change though a they are now done purely through CSS which allows greater control of the look and feel of the forum.
