Hi,

I ran up Beta 2 on a test server/s the other day.

Web Server: P3 800, Server 2003 R2
SQL Server: P4 2.6, 512 RAM, SQL 2005, Server 2003 (This is a clean build with the only the forum database on the server)

First query is the forum is very slow. The top of the page will display where the Active Topics, Memberlist, Calendar, Search is but then the rest of the page will take a minute or more to display.

Can someone give me some pointers as to where I might start to look at whats causing this?

What rights should I be setting for the user that connects back to the SQL server? When setting up the SQL version it prompts for a DBO? But what rights should I be giving the user in the SQL connection string?

Finally, is there a way to archive the forum... I was going to look at moving a forum across to SQL which we use, but its become that bloated with junk, I was just wanting to archive it so we could still read, but no longer post? I guess I could modify permissions to read only?

Anyway if someone can help me out with where to start looking at why the forum/pages are so slow to display it would be appreciated.

I will try an install of RC1 tomorrow evening and see if thats any different, as there was a few other small issues I noticed with the Beta as well...

Thanks.

Seems strange that you are saying that it's slow when everyone else is reporting how fast it is going.

Usually slow delays point to network issues where SQL Server is concerned. One way around this is to install SQL Server on the web server and use 'localhost' as the server address, this would get rid of any network issues.

If you are worried about server overload, Web Wiz Forums flys along when using SQL Server 2005 Express installed locally on the web server.

Also, 512Mb of RAM doesn't sound like enough, in my experience Windows 2003 often needs almost all that just to boot, then SQL Server usually likes another 200Mb or so.

You can set forums to not allow posting, etc. and have read only access, which can be used for archiving. You can do this using the built in permissions system.
