After over a month of development since the last beta release of Web Wiz Forums, version 7 Release Candidate 1 has now been released.

Although this will probally be the version that will become the full version there may still be a few bugs to iron out, so you may want to hold off for a few weeks for the full version before running it on a live site.

The following new features are available in version 7.0 RC1:-

  • Faster Forum Engine
  • Higher Security
  • Batch move topics
  • Individual Forum permissions for members
  • Bug fixes
  • A few other new features

Excellent!!!!

BTW the  documentation for MS SQL says the file name is called

"Edit the file 'msSQL_server_connection.asp' found in the admin directory entering your SQL Server name..." its called something slightly different...

But top job!

Anyone know an easy way of taking a v6 Access version and moving it to a v7 sql2k version ?

Thanks in advance

gerry

Ooh... passwords wont work... anyone know a cure for that?

(what I mean by that copy the pw's over wouldn't work directly... solution provided below)

If you mean placing passwords on forums then it has been tested and works fine, if you have already logged into the password protected forum and choose the automactic login then you will not need to login into the forum again unless you delete your cookie cache.

If you mean something else then could you supply more info, like when and where passwords don't work.

Whatever course you choose, run it through the v6 > v7 Access Migrator first (using the latest RC1 DB) which will properly convert / encrypt your User passwords. Upsize to SQL 2k from there.

Hope this helps

Awesome work again borg!

The ability to batch move topics was a good add-on. I always set up an "archive" forum on my EQ websites to move older but still useful topics.

I can't seem to find anything in this forum about upgrading my SQL data from version 6.34 to version 7rc1.

Some time ago I used the scripts available for the upgrade to beta 3 to get that working for test purposes. And the version history told me to do three things to upgrade beta 3 to RC1 (add fields, add a stored procedure and amend a stored procedure). I did this and found that several other fields are also required in RC1 like the avatar fields in the config and author tables. And I still have problems....

Is there an easier way ? Is there an upgrade script yet?

I may have found my own answer. The version history appears to have a typo that mislead me. I looked at "Changes from version 7 beta 3 to version 7 RC1".

I guess it should read "Changes from version 7 beta 4 to version 7 RC1" and I need to implement the changes under section "Changes from version 7 beta 3 to version 7 beta 4".

PS another typo: "7. tblForum new field - Moved_ID - interger datatype - default value 0" - I believe this is an addition to tblTopic.

There are a number of issues with RC1 that will be ironed out before the release of the full version.

I have one new feature / issue with RC1.

When you are a a member but not activated you cannot edit your profile even though it gives you the option. Also it does not explain enough that the user needs to Activate there account..

Also on this page as well as a more descriptive warning, there should be a link to allow them to resend there an activation email, this is most important.

"borg, is the Access version really improved for faster performance?"

Hmm, I could be completely wrong, (could be the host, could be a number of factors) but it seems to be a lot slower... in fact a couple of times it timed out... is this a bug or is this just me... site in question - http://www.AffordableSupplements.co.uk/forum - www.AffordableSupplements.co.uk/forum

The access version is faster than version 6 on all pages, all version 7's have had some bits changed on some pages between versions to cut down on the number of db quiries that would speed things up a little.

It's possible your server, as the servers memory gets used up things will slow down, this is a big problem with shared web hosting as if others on the server are not releasing the servers memory evryones site will slowly get slower and slower, till the server is rebooted and the memory freed up.

OK what I seem to be having problems with is upsizing from V6 to V7, the problem is that when people try and post a reply it seems to just hang, and not actually post their, well post... is this related to cookies from the previous version, or is this completely new, all the members / forums / posts are there from the previous version... ALSO when they log out they can't seem to log back in...

Personally, I never had any of these issues, this is just from users... not sure if I have really provided enough details... HTH's

There are bugs v7 RC1 that do prevent some users from posting, so only use this version for testing. These bugs will be sorted out for the final version, which is why this isn't the final version yet.
