I took my 7.x db and used the upgrade tool. Since I appearantly am uncapable of creating a copy of the database from our host that includes the seed identity parameters I decided to create a new empty version 8 database, upgrade the 7.x copy and then copy the data to the new empty database.

All looked good and fine, but when I copied the contents I was presented with errors about columns that exist in the source but not in the destination.

I am not sure if that is my only problem (I hope), but would it be possible to modify the upgrade tool so that it drops the columns in the tables that are no longer used. Also you should consider removing the 'beta warnings' in the tool Wink

Once you have upgraded your 7.x database you can now use that database with version 8, just point web wiz forums version 8 at you upgraded version 7.x database using the 'database/database_connection.asp' file.

Copy and pasting data from one database to another will NOT work, for a number of reasons and not just the reason you mention, but also tables and post will not be associated correctly with each other, thus your forum will fail to work if you attempt to use this method.

The problem with auto dropping old fields in the database is that many have indexs accoiated with them, these often have unique names, and therefore can not be dropped using a standard generic tool. These fields that are no longer used do no harm to the upgraded database and if you really want or need to remove these redundant fields you can use the Version History file to get a list of dropped fields.

Also, since many of us have modified the forums, some of us may have legacy code that still uses those fields.  Its better that the field be left in the database for this reason.  For example, almost all code I write would be able to handle a situation where the expected field is blank/empty, but would crash if there was no field there at all.  Also, in some situations, it might be useful for us to modify version 8 to continue using the field since we have started using it to control other parts of our website.  All in all, its better if old fields are left in the database.

Like Borg said, if you are sure you don't need them, you can delete them yourself.
