Hi

Can anyone help as i am new to IIS and setting up web sites.

I have followed the instructions on this site for setting up the IIS and a website but i can not get the //localhost or //localhost/webname or the IP address/whatever to fire up with any web pages.

The vitrual directory for my web site was created by browsing to my d drive for the sites folders.

According to the instrctions that should have been it!

Are there any other permissions etc i need to change to get up and running?

All I want to do is to practice / learn how to build local websites using ASP and MS Access but with out IIS I'm stuffed!

Thanks in advance for any sugestions. ... polite ones!

Well, if you would have shared the output you actually did get it might help. In IIS itself, when you go to the Virusl Directory and right click any htm file you got in there you should see an option for Browse. that should navigate your IE to something like http://localhost/yourdir/file.htm and display it. If it does not, let us know what IE told ya.

Hi Michael

I tried what you said

IE opened a window and started to open the page but has only got half way through the load and so does not display the page and so no error it just sits there.

Any ideas?

Going into IIS selecting a page from the site and clicking on browse finally produced the same eror in IE:

"The page cannot be displayed"

Even if you just go to http://localhost and not loading a page going for default? You should be getting the Under Construction Page....

Did you try to use your computer name as opposed to localhost?

I've tried the following;

http://localhost - http://localhost
http://localhost/canberra/index.htm - http://localhost/canberra/index.htm
http://home1/canberra - http://home1/canberra
http://10.100.0.101 - http://10.100.0.101

and other combinations, i still get the same error page of "The page cannot be displayed"

Cannot find server or DNS Error
Internet Explorer

Your machine name when used as tour home url will look something like http://mymachinename/
You might also want to try http://127.0.0.1

First go into control panel anch check that the iis service is running. Start it if it isn't. If you can't start it there, re install.

Hi dypers

I have been into the IIS control panel and checked that the default web site is running and it is.

My machimes name is home1, as mentioned earlier i have tried various combinations of localhost, the website name on its own, and the machines IP address.

I have now tried the 127.0.0.1 address and i still get the same result "The page cannot be displayed"

I have even gone as far as to switch on the indexing server. but this makes no difference.

i have now uninstalled IIS rebooted Reinstalled it again and gone through the Web Wiz ISS guide but still no joy.Censored

Try this and make sure you do it exactly as stated below:
  1. Insert the Windows XP Professional CD-Rom into your CD-Rom Drive (if you have the i386 folder on the c drive you don't need the cd)
  2. From your Start Button, go to Settings, and Control Panel
  3. In the Control Panel window select Add/Remove Programs
  4. In the Add/Remove window select Add/Remove Windows Components
  5. In the Wizard window check Internet Information Services, click OK
  6. An Inetpub folder will be created on your harddrive
  7. Open the Inetpub folder, and find a folder named wwwroot
  8. Create a new folder, like "MyWeb", under wwwroot.
  9. Use a text editor to write some ASP code, save the file as "test1.asp" in the "MyWeb" folder
  10. Make sure your Web server is running - its status can be checked by going into the Control Panel, then Administrative Tools, and double-click the "IIS Manager" icon
  11. Open your browser and type in "http://localhost/MyWeb/test1.asp", to view your first ASP page

let us know how it goes, good luck.

a personal firewall could also be blocking you so you may want to check that.  also check to see if the server is using port 80

You might have to check the Hosts file too.

Go to Start >> My Computer >> C:\  ((or whatever your local drive is) >> WINDOWS >> System32 >> drivers >> etc >> right-click on Hosts and select open >> from the list, select NotePad.

When the Hosts file opens up, check at the end of it to see that the following is mentioned:
127.0.0.1       localhost

Guys

Thanks for sticking with this one!

Scotty 32:
Followed your link and uncheck the option - On refresh I get web site found ... waiting for reply and then i get a blank page with a red egg timer and the word done. I can't click on it to retrieve any messages as my mouse pointer turns to an egg timer when i mouse over!

ctscott:
I am running a McAfee firewall which i have now temporarily disabled with no change in the outcome.
I have checked the default web site in IIS and it is running on default TCP Port 80.

Info Tech:
I've checked the Host file and it reads as per your message.
I've also pinged the loopback IP address 127.0.0.1 and "localhost" and it works both ways.

keep the thoughts coming guys, if I'm ever to get up and running with ASP then you're my best chance of getting there.

If all the above didn't solve the problem then I'd advise you to format your hard drive and re-install windows and then re-install IIS.

ooouch!

I only built the machine and installed it a couple of weeks ago!! I'll have to give that one some thought, but will probably do it after I calm down from giving the thing few technical taps with my boot!

Thanks for the help and advice so far I'll get back to everyone with the result

if you're running SP2 don't forget to check and see if the Microsoft firewall is stopping you.

well in IE, you can have "friendly errors" which means if theres an error in your code, you wont get the asp error, you'll get "page cannot be found" this courses alot of new asp'ers to think the page ... cannot be found, but its just IE hidding it

you said you "unchecked" the option, that means it WAS hidding your error
you should have an error on your page now, i cant comment on the eggtimer or what not, as it might be part of your page.

post the error you get in the page

Hi

One last word on this subject then I'm done.

i am running McAfee's internet suite 7.1
I have just come off line with McAfee because as soon as i had re-installed all of the McAfee stuf my problem came back... there wasn't a problem with IIS 5.1 it was with McAfee's PRIVACY SERVICE and they could not resolve the problem with a twek I have had to upgrade the PRIVACY SERVICE to the latest version and without any changes to its setup IIS is now up and running.Tongue

So if anyone out there is running IIS 5.1 and McAfee Internet Suite 7.1 with Privacy Service and are suffering the problems i has the upgrade to the latest version of Privacy Service
