Subject: Remove username field and use email id only

Hi,

If i want a forum user to register using just his email address and not to use any username.

In other words how can i remove the username field and just use the email address field for an user to register?

If i remove the username field within the code, will it lead to any bugs in the application?

To make this work I will probably need to make a few other changes such as
1. in the login page, replacing username with email address.
2. removing username field from forgotten password page
3. search by email instead of username
4. how to replace Topic 'posted by username' to 'posted by email address'

Any help and ideas would be appreciated..

Thanks,

Sathya

I think you're going to get a lot of traffic from spambots and a lot of PO'd users when their email addresses are harvested. LOL

I think you're making it harder than it needs to be. Just remove the username stuff from register.asp and the javascript that validates it. In the form handler for the registration page, remove any additional validation for the username field and set it equal to the email address field.

You might also want to remove the registration option to toggle "make by email address availale" as it's moot at this point because all email addresses are going to be available.

EDIT: IIRC, and email address can be 63 or 67 characters long according to the email RFC. I'm sure the username field is smaller than that. There's other threads about on how to change the size of the username field.

Valuable advice there!

email id only is one of the requirements of the forum i am setting up. spam will be dealt with.

Removing the username and setting it to email address might just ease it up for me.

Also when you register here on Web Wiz, the email address field is mandatory and doesnt let you register untill you enter one but the downloaded software doesnt have an option to make this field mandatory.

It lets you register without entering an email address.

Any idea why is that?

thats because its an option in the Admin area of the forum

i think its Forum Configuration, you set "Send Email Activation Code" or something

As long as you're in the admin area, it's also a good idea to block registrations from aol, hotmail, msn, and yahoo addresses. Mail has about a 50/50 chance of getting to an inbox for hotmail, msn, anf yahoo. A much lower percentage will hit an aol inbox.

If you absolutely must allow users to use those email addresses, post something on your site about how to "whitelist" mail from your address and include the info in the registration email. Even if your email address is whitlisted, there's a good chance that mail from it won't get through.
