I think he's refering to the use of a western calendar rather than a different cutural calendar. So far as I know, date/time is hard coded into the phsical circuitry based upon the clock chips and is based upon the western calendar by ISO convention.

There's more to it than just changing the year. Other calendars use different methods of counting the number of days in a year, when the year starts, 10... 12... or lunar months, etc. Some have days that don't belong to a month. In fact, there are even two Thai calendars. a lunar and a solar one.
