The forum sits in a table column that is opened in header.asp and closed in footer .asp.

For an additional left column, add a <td></td> to header.asp. For an additional right column, add it to footer.asp.

ok.
That's an example of using a background color and rounded corner images. there's a table way to do this and a css way.

For the table way, you put the forum in the center cell of the 2nd row of a 3 row table. Set the table background color to whatever.
in the first and 3rd rows, use quarter-round background/forground images in the 1st and 3rd cells. Set the width of those cells to the width of the images.

for a css solution, check out the rounded corner generator at
http://www.neuroticweb.com/recursos/css-rounded-box/ - http://www.neuroticweb.com/recursos/css-rounded-box/
You could also use the images generated there for the table solution.

I use something similar at http://new2asp.com/forum - http://new2asp.com/forum but I like the css produced by the generator better.

.rbtop div { background: url(tl.gif) no-repeat top left; }

.rbbot div { background: url(bl.gif) no-repeat bottom left; }

.rbcontent { margin: 0 7px; }
.rbroundbox { width: 50%; margin: 1em auto; }

<div class="rbroundbox">
<div class="rbtop"><div></div></div>
<div class="rbcontent">

Without testing this, I'd start by...
Put the css at the bottom of the file css/default_css.asp
Put the first 3 lines of html at the bottom of includes/header.asp
Put the last 3 lines of html at the top of includes/footer.asp
