I was trying to figure out what some of the icons meant by hovering my mouse over the icons. Normally doing so will give an indication of what the icon/image represents. WWF8 doesn't.

This is because the alt tag is being used. Neither Firefox nor Opera 9 pop up the alt tag. They use the title tag. The W3C has made it clear that the title tag is to be used for this purpose.

Some of the images have titles, but several icons do not.

Buttons that have what they are don't have title tags, buttons that are just icons do.

Borg:

Just saw your reply.

IE: alt values pop up on a mouse hover
FF: alt values do not pop up on a mouse hover

In the end, tool tips are appearing using IE but not FF. I consider this a bug.

If you call browser behaviour a bug then there isn't much than can be done about that except contact Firefox and ask them to chnage it.

All toolbar icons use title tags so will pop-up what they are for in all browsers.

In my applications I use TITLE tags and ALT tags.

They have different purposes, but in practical usage, the TITLE tags are helpful for non-IE users.

This hasn't been fixed yet.

Saying it is a Firefox issue and to contact them is ridiculous.

IE is known far and wide for not adhering to standards. They are probably the worst offender of the the major browsers.

The code police won't be checking my site so this is something that doesn't worry me too much. But this forum is by far the best piece of code ever put together to server a purpose (at no charge!!!!)... thanks Borg!!!

I'm sure title tags will be included in version 9

I'm with ya'. My code is far from technically correct. However, that is not the issue. Please re-read my original thread.

This is a usability issue for non-IE users.

borg brought the issue up the standards issue.

It is helpful to use both alt and title tags due to different browsers treating them differently.

The main GUI interface isn't due a facelift till version 9. This will be one of the main features of version 9, and completely new look with multiple skins supplied with the forum from default allowing the admin or users to select which skin they wish to use.

Yes, the discussion about W3C standards left me wanting to know the opinions of others, so I deleted my post here and opened a topic about it in the General Discussion area. This is a support thread and didn't want to turn it into a W3C standards discussion.

Got it. Thanks :)

borg:

Does that mean you are going to include alt/title tags or does that mean you are putting me off. Either answer is acceptable. :)
