While I'm usually pretty quick to offer praise for software that I
appreciate, I don't usually rant too much about the ones that drive me
nuts, and my rants are generally pretty tame.
Support is always
important, and that can drive me up the wall when developers don't
support their products. (After spending a few hundred dollars on an
upgrade, I'm steaming as the developer won't answer emails... as
usual...)
Anyways, the last few incidents have pretty much
pushed me over the edge, and while reading about some anti-spyware that
just doesn't work (another pet peeve), I figured I'd whip up http://tinyurl.com/p7a2v - a site for complaining about software .
Since most places like to keep clean, I figured a small spot on the
Internet for airing out dirty software might be useful or at least
cathartic.
So if anyone feels like ranting about something, there's no bad word filter.
Cheers,
Ryan
P.S. For the Boss, I figure you'll like this one!

I've got one to rant about at the moment, I bought 123LogAnalyxer from 123LogAnalyxer.com for $149 USD so it wasn't cheap.
The software doesn't work and I have tried emailing them for 2 weeks but all emails bounce back that their inbox has exceeded it's quoter.
I've even phones them in the US but all I get is an answer phone message saying XYZ software, home of mp3maker and 123LogAnayzer please leave a message, but never here anything back.
They seem un reachable so I have been ripped off!!

I had someone like that long time ago. I ended up telling my bank it has been charged wrong (I lied). Once they put a hold on the CC charge they were able to respond very quickly. You can also write the Better Business Bureau, not sure if it helps but they do have weight.

I rarely use anti-spyware software as it just identifies everything. Occasionally I'll use it.
I have a Pest Patrol license, though I haven't even installed it.
Spybot was on that list that I mentioned in the post. Think it should be removed?
borg - I've got a similar situation now where I'm trying to get support from an author. His product is ok, but he regularly blows off support emails and deletes posts in his forums, which are pre-moderated.

Well this company make not only 123LogAnalyzer, but also mp3 CD Maker which is quite popular and well known, so you would think that the company would be a professional outfit.
I even resorted to faxing them last night to see if that would get a response, but have not heard anything.

I've been emailing a couple developers for support.
One guy I emailed 4x and posted in his forums before I finally got a response. The post in the forums, while polite, was not nice and mentioned that I had emailed him several times. He deleted the post...
Another guy just keeps telling me that I'm not giving him enough information to solve the problem no matter how much information I give him. I've given him everything I can possibly think of and he's just useless. His answers are all in lower case, not in sentence form, excessively short, and vauge.
But at least I've gotten responses from them. Sounds like you need to seriously s**tlist the guys you're dealing with -boRg-. Perhaps here - http://tinyurl.com/p7a2v - http://tinyurl.com/p7a2v

I use it and I like it. It's a little too powerful if you go past the basics. It even has some clean sweep type features and it's free. I've never had trouble with it.

Spybot is great.. I use it all the time with no probs. I have recently been looking at ewido spyware , which is now made by the same people who do AVG. So I assume it must be good ?

Plesk needs to be added to the sh*tware list... the Plesk control panel is the worst control panel ever!!!! Ive spent every day this week fixing domains that got all screwed up because of random plesk f**k ups and its driving me nuts. Plesk doesnt manage IIS, FTP, or file permissions worth sh*t and just to fix them you have to delete the domain and you still have to setup IIS manually.

I never use control panels except when I'm helping someone with their site that they've got hosted. And I've never used Plesk, so I really don't know much about it.
But from my own experience, I'd put the whole category of web site control panels in there. At some point you always need to get down and dirty with the OS tools, which I presume is what the control panel is there to avoid...
Go ahead and post it though!

If you do get it going, let me know. We should link all these sites together as a kind of "rant network".
I've got "thehatesite.com" setup as a blog site, and I'd like to get a few people together to blog rants on stupid things that they hate. e.g. I hate that when you get to an airport in the US, there are no bloody clocks or information booths outside the secure area. Man - does that ever burn me after a 14 hour flight...
If anyone wants to help blog about dumb stuff that they hate, let me know. I'd like to get a few people on board to launch the site.
Oh, by the way... Did I mention that http://www.panasonicsucks.org/ - Panasonic Sucks ?
On another note, I've gotten some criticism for sh*tware.net. I really think those people just don't get it, and are probably the kind of developers that will end up with their products on there at some point because they're just not willing to try and understand people very well. If you read what people rant about, you can get an idea about why people are angry and upset. Take that information and do everything you can to avoid those situations, and you've got a great resource. It takes more effort to read though as you have to try to understand people and their problems. You can't just be a lazy reader and get anything valuable out of it.
Cheers,
Ryan

I like the idea of having a forum where people can rant about sh*tty software. But i do feel for the developers that have customers post bad reviews, because i can understand that some are real reviews, and some arejust from people that just dont understand how something really works and just makes up whatever they want to make something look bad.

I know exactly what you mean. And I do expect that there will be some unfair posts.
But I think that more or less, most will be on the level.
I'm pretty careful before I rant, and try to make sure that I'm giving a fair assessment.
There is one post in there right now that is kind of fair and kind of not fair. I know the software and that it works under the right conditions. I've tested it.
The problem is that the developer didn't create the software with enough robustness to cover a large number of cases that will be fairly common. I know what they need to do, but again, I don't think that they will actually do it in a reasonable time frame if at all.
Now, as a developer I know what the problems are, but users won't. It's very very far from reasonable to expect a user to know that deep rooted problem. It either works or it doesn't. Again, this boils down to the developer being careless and negligent in developing the software.
The developer never specifies the right conditions at their site, and that's a problem because now it doesn't work as advertised. Not a good thing. There's something to be said for being upfront and honest when presenting your software to people for sale.

By all means - rant away~!
I've taken some flak from some people over the site. I don't think that they quite get how good it feels just to scream sometimes. It's soooo cathartic! And there just aren't many places that you can really say what you want to sometimes.

One product I absolutely loathe is Norton AV (In fact anything Symantec).. their antivirus is as slow as sh*t and is about as useful as a chocolate tea pot. and we all know how useful a teapot made of chocolate would be.

Don't get me started on Norton, it's as bad if not worse than most viruses (virii?).
It's almost like it needs a processor of it's own as well, even with a dual core it still drags any chance of multi tasking away from your grasp

I evaluated ewido and was unimpressed. That and AVG didn't bundle it in with their SOHO lic. I'm sticking with spybot... for now.
BTW... AVG has a very effective software firewall in the bundle now. I like it too.

I really like AVG. I have a 5 user license and it's VERY much worth it.
I don't always run it, but it's nice and light and doesn't slow things down.
