Hello:
I just updated my forum to the newest version and have tested it in my laptops's localhost. Everything is working fine. Then I put the forum on a flash disk and put it on my live server in an existing web site. The files are there, I see them, but when I try to access the forum I get a 404 error.

The page cannot be found

The page you are looking for might have been removed, had its name changed, or is temporarily unavailable.

Please try the following:

  • Make sure that the Web site address displayed in the address bar of your browser is spelled and formatted correctly.
  • If you reached this page by clicking a link, contact the Web site administrator to alert them that the link is incorrectly formatted.
  • Click the javascript:history.back%281%29 - Back button to try another link.

HTTP Error 404 - File or directory not found.
Internet Information Services (IIS)

Technical Information (for support personnel)

  • Go to http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=8180 - Microsoft Product Support Services and perform a title search for the words HTTP and 404.
  • Open IIS Help, which is accessible in IIS Manager (inetmgr), and search for topics titled Web Site Setup, Common Administrative Tasks, and About Custom Error Messages.

I don't understand what is going on. In IIS all files are there, I made sure that running scripts is permitted, etc. From this error it is telling me the page does not exist, which is not true. I have even tried to get to it by typing in the full address and still get the same error. What do I need to do to get the forum working again. Any help would be appreciated. If you need more detailed information, I can provide that as well. The site that the forum resides on is http://www.baneoftheaegis.com - www.baneoftheaegis.com .

The 404 error means that the file can not be found.

It could be that you have incorrectly setup your directories or IIS and so it can not find the files.

I have double checked everything in IIS and it looks correct to me. I had the forum running fine before then for some odd reason lost IIS completely. When it was reinstalled and the site readded, then I had problems. Please tell me how the directory should be set up and I will check again. BTW, I have another site running ASP.NET and it is working just fine.

If you use IIS 6 as far as I recall you may need to set ASP as an allowed 'web server extension' in the IIS manager.

However, you may need to check this information on an IIS site as it is not an area I delve into very often.

Thank you. It is set for allowing ASP pages. I also tried another experiment. I loaded the site on the live server under Inetpub to test it that way. It will use the same IIS that the live side uses. Sure enough, it doesn't work. There is something wrong with IIS. Now I just have to figure out what.

If you're using Windows Server 2003 like we are, the solution on this link cured the problem:
