Two rules I always hold firm, OK three..

1. Always include scope in your variable names
2. Always include datatype in your variable names
3. Always use names that describe what you are doing

So a module level integer variable for storing my shoesize would be:

mintShoeSize

This way I can look at code and instantly know the scope, data type and the data I am looking at in the variable. I despise code where I have no idea if I am looking at a procedural value, a module value, etc.
