When using version 7 I set myself to receive emails for every forum...

...I can't seem to find the email toggle option at forum level any more although its right there at topic level....

am I going mad?

it should be on the forum_topics.asp and forum_posts.asp pages.

you have to have email notfication enabled (looks like you have)

i would try re uploading the forum_topics page to make sure its not corrupt,

i would advise to upgrade to V8.x as its got many upgrades, performance  and security fixes over V7.x

Many thanks...Sorry I didn't make myself clear....

When I used to use version 7 I set myself to receive emails for every forum...

Now I use version 8.04 (I always upgrade quickly!) I have just noticed that I can't find the option...(but am still getting the mails)

Forum Posts works fine - I see Toggle Email Notifications for this Topic

Forum Topics does not seem to display the toggle...I have tried replacing that asp page.

Has the option to get email notifications at FORUM level been removed or is there a bug?

OK I have found the DESIGN FEATURE that causes this problem...

It seems that in forum_topics, the toggle is not displayed if RSS Feed is switched on. I assume the intention here is that RSS should replace email notifications at forum level whereas email notifications are still allowed at topic level.

In forum_topics the code is:
If blnRss = False AND blnEmail AND blnLoggedInUserEmail AND intGroupID <> 2 Then

this can be replaced by the following to always allow the toggle (without disturbing the code too much!):
If blnRss = False or True AND blnEmail AND blnLoggedInUserEmail AND intGroupID <> 2 Then

BUT...is the design choice logical. First, I want email notifications at forum level AND I want RSS feed so why should I only be able to have one or the other.

ALSO...members with email notifications already switched on at forum level seem to have no way to switch them off again once RSS is activated.

Can we allow both please...?

The problem is you are looking in the wrong place on the new system.

Forum email subscriptions are now handled through your forum settings, click on your settings link at the top then click the email button to get a page that lists all your email subscriptions, you can use this page to subscribe or un-subscribe to any forum.

OK thanks Borg. Under settings I can now manage both forum and topic email notifications quite easily.

But, why does the RSS setting control the display of the toggle at forum level....surely they are separate features?

RSS puts much less strain on servers and less emails sent, so it better to encourage your users to use RSS.

RSS is much better than email notification anyway as long as you use the right RSS Reader

OK understood...I use IE7 for RSS so emails work better for me but I take your point.

You may want to try something like Thunderbird as it's RSS Feed will display the posts almost the same as egging them by email, so will a number of other RSS Readers.

IE7 only gives live book mark feeds for RSS and not the full RSS Feed.

Thanks again. I tried it and it does exactly as you said...much better than IE7 for RSS.

I think I'll stick with email notifications however, simply because I have my email client open all the time anyway - I don't want two programs open and I have no choice but to  stick with Outlook.

But I will encourage members to use RSS instead.

Regards.

Try Newsgator, it runs in the system bar next to the clock and only pops up when you have some new data in the RSS Feed.

You can tell it how often to check on your forum, then whenever you get a new post, it will pop-up an alert for you, you can the read the post in it and choose if you want to go to the site to reply to it.

As you probably know, Newsgator seems to have a version that works with Outlook...thanks for the tip.

Borg,

The "Email Notification Subscriptions" area you mentioned a few posts ago where we toggle notification on and off - can that be set as a default anywhere so that when people join the forum they will automatically be subscribed to every forum?

This has been requested for one of my sites that hosts a WebWiz forum.

From what I see it's up to the user to manually tick the forums they are interested in, but most people don't seem to set it up..

Many thanks

There isn't such an option, the reason being is that in most countries and stats it is illegal to automatically subscribe someone to an email list (which this would be) and website owner who automatically subscribe people to email lists can face heavy fines and even imprisonment.
