thinking about seriously throwing out windows and migrating to BSD for good what ever be the drawback and learning curve...because even at peak security..i dont seem to get rid of worms and viruses chasing me..

gut feeling says MS intentionally creates vurneable software to fuel their partners AV businesses

How you explain the latest controversy then?

McCaffey and another leading anti-virus manufacturer throwing up a hissy fit over Microsoft refusing to allow any software into the kernel of Vista.

P.S. what stuff are you doing that your always over run with worms and viruses?

For a client, I'd probably pick ubuntu over bsd.

the boss, i thought you were a big fan of windows Question and that the linux community was dumb..

but then if you don't have the latest windows updates installed and an up-to-date antivirus you will dislike your system.

ok i have geniune windows set tp update automatically
no browsing of porn or anything..i wouldnt do that on the production pc...
the pc in subject here is used as a storage server running win 2003..with dual antivirus and stuff...also has Faronics anti-executeable installed..

and with all that..i was still hit by a nasty virus which corrupted most of my HTML, PDF and EXE files..

yes i still think linux is dumb but then i never mentioned Linux.. and BSD is not Linux

ok quick votes

BSD + KDE
or Solaris + KDE

I'm a big Solaris fan for either client or server.
I run SecureBSD servers/firewalls/dmz's with no GUI - mostly because I haven't had a need to convert them to Solaris now that it's a freebie.

Best non-linux client (IMHO) would be hp-ux then Solaris, then Free BSD. For linux clients though, it'd Ubuntu all the way.

as a part of my hobby i did infected and compromised computers or just leave a PC connected to the net and let it get infected..

what amazes me is that how basic stuff in windows get exploited for propogation of viruses and worms. . For example, the auto run features of drives for propogation of Chir.B worm..

It is definately because every advice on security has been put behind by MS for the so called "user friendliness" in the OS.

second big sucker in Windows is that it doesnt have a solid method of setting the files as read only. Which just plan sucks..

One of the best lessons learnt in windows is never to store EXE files with an extension. I usually replace the .exe with _exe. Because exe files will be the first one most viruses will infect and then these excutable files will themselves become virus spreaders.
