Subject: Upgrade SQL Server 2000 To SQL 2005 Express
Date Posted: 29 October 2006 at 7:27pm

Hello everyone... I'm thinking about upgrading from SQL 2000 server to SQL 2005 Express (Free edition)... did anyone try this before? What are the pros and cons...? Can I upgrade while the server is running? Will my database on the SQL 2000 still work and not get lost?

Why do you want to upgrade?

Because I thought I won't afford upgrading to SQL Server 2005 when the 2000 version becomes old enough...
besides... security and other features as shown here: http://www.microsoft.com/sql/editions/express/features.mspx - http://www.microsoft.com/sql/editions/express/features.mspx

I have not tried upgrading from SQL 2000 Standard to 2005 Express but I don't see where that would be a problem. Your existing databases will stay in 2000 compat level so if you want to use new features like CLR etc on the existing databases you need to change the compat level to 90 (2005) first. You should be able to do that with Management Studio Express.

I've done it a few times, I even done it with this site.

It is quite simple just use any of the import export tools, or you can even detach the database from SQL Server 2000 and reattach it to SQL 2005 Express.

I've even done a back up of a database in SQL 2000 and then used the restore option in SQL Management Studio to restore the database to SQL 2005 Express.

This site runs on SQL 2005 Express and I find it runs great with no problems at all.

The compatibility level from 80 to 90 that Michael mentions can be done in SQL Management Studio by editing the properties of the database.

I am planning an upgrade from SQL2000 to SQL2005. The upgrade advisor identifies an issue with the WWF database. Any help on this?

Remove references to undocumented system tables
Source Type: Database
Database: wwf
Object Name: wwfSpDBinfo
Object Type: P
System Table: spt_values

It seems to me that a stored procedure in WWF (wwfSpDBinfo) is referring to a System Table (spt_values) that does not exist in SQL 2005.

That is just one feature you would have to update the reference. Not a big deal anyway as it's just a function in the Admin Menu.

I have no idea what function(s) I would lose and I have no idea what I should update. Can anyone provide the solution?

I'm sure Borg will want to automate the choice of reference so users can employ either 2000 or 2005 without doing their own coding...

Upgrade to version 8 of web wiz forums, it doesn't use stored procedures so you can safely delete all store procedures in your web wiz forums database, so this would not be an issue.

Thanks Borg.

As I am already using version 8 I guess all stored procedures must therefore be left over from the 7 to 8 upgrade.

I will backup the database just in case and delete them all.
