i have had a similar problem but with the mail functions, hosting company (fasthosts) had changed settings and not told anyone, you could try asking your host and see if they have made changes.

well it came back up on it's own but it's doing all kinds of other strange stuff now. For example, when I get a private message the alert window comes up over and over again until you hit cancel. Today I'm having trouble staying logged into my forum, it works fine on this forum.

Is there some kind of repair install I can do maybe? I don't want to lose any of the data.

Reupload all the files. You might have a corrupt file.

It seems there have been a couple updates since I installed the forum. I'm currently running 8.02 and it looks like 8.04 is out. There do not appear to be any upgrade instructions though, just clean install. I'm just worried about the setup script dropping any exiting tables and creating new ones.

Is there anywhere I can get some additional info on performing an update instead of a clean install?

well I replaced all the files on the server with new copies I downloaded from here and then just copied over my database settings and that all seemed to go ok. The admin control panel now shows version 8.04.

The problem is the forum is still acting wierd. I still can't stay logged in for more then a minute or two. If I try to delete a post I get logged out and the post is not deleted. It seems to be a problem with the cookie, it never remembers my login anymore. Also it shows a session variable in the querystring now which it never needed before.

I also tried it on my laptop and I was having the same kind of problems. Anyone got any ideas? This is all very strange.

Like Landlord-Forum said, I'd contact your host to see if they've made any changes to their server settings etc.

If you have not changed anything yourself in the connection string, my guess is that the MDAC database drivers on the server may have become corrupted.

You should contact your web host about this.

Well, I called my hosting company and as I expected they told me that nothing has been changed on my server. The database drivers appear to be working fine, I have no trouble connecting to the databse.

I loaded up fiddler to take a closer look and I can see what I assume is the problem. The forum is attempting to set the cookie "WWF" on every response but for some reason the browser is not accepting it.

Set-Cookie: WWF=LV=2006%2D11%2D12+11%3A20%3A59&SID=ebbze5daz73ccf8bdca4za5ff1c9dzz4; expires=Mon, 12-Nov-2007 18:20:58 GMT; path=/forum

When I come to this forum the WWF cookie is included in the request and everything works just fine. When I'm at my forum the cookie is not stored or sent back to the server. I do remember sometime last week the clock on the forum was wrong and I had to set it back. I don't know if thats related or not.

upon further investigation I've found that the forum will work fine if addressed like this:

http://www.domain.com/forum - http://www.domain.com/forum

but not when I use the virtual subdomain like this:

http://forum.domain.com - http://forum.domain.com

I have always used the subdomain in the past, Why would this stop working all of the sudden?

Looks like the DNS mapping at your host is broken.
When you use forum.example.com, does it go to a 404 page or to example.com?

it goes to the forum, and the forum runs. But the browser won't accept the WWF cookie if it's addressed with the subdomain, so you can't stay logged in.

If you're using IE, blow away the cookies and restart browser. If you've recently upgraded to IE7, and blowing away the cookies doesn't work, check out the MEIS newsgroup. There were some problems with IE7 accepting old cookies in some situations.

Im running IE6 sp2, I have deleted all the cookies and temporary internet files a couple times. It dosn't make a difference.

I'm not sure if it's affecting other users or just me. But it seems wierd that it wouldn't work on both my desktop and laptop. I guess it'll just have to be a mystery for now, it's very strange though.

It's nothing like the URL of your forum in the WWF Forum Admin login, is it?

For example, it's set at http://www.domain.com/forum - http://www.domain.com/forum  so when you visit using http://forum.domain.com/ - http://forum.domain.com  the cookie is still trying to write for your forum at http://www.domain.com/forum - http://www.domain.com/forum

I check that too. In the admin panel the forum url is set to http://forum.domain.com - http://forum.domain.com

but it still dosn't work if I visit the forum at that address. Even with it set to forum.domain.com it only works for me if I use http://www.domain.com/forum - www.domain.com/forum

It did work fine using the forum.domain.com url for 6 months before this happened and no modifications were made.

I think I got a corrupted cookie when the forum threw the error I mentioned at the beginning of this post. But for some reason I cannot get it out of my system now. I realize that explanation goes against just about all logic but it's all I got right now.

I'd try another browser. If FF or Opera handle the cookies correctly, then it's an IE problem. I on of the other browsers produces the same results as IE6, then I'd figure there's a dns routing/framing problem.
