Few Lines - 0.2 - 4.5 Points (depending on the content)
Above That - 5 Points

I have been floating that idea as well but I haven't had a chance to upgrade our forums from 7.9 yet and I felt it would be better to build this on the 8.0+ platform.  Anyone want to do this as a group effort to improve our chances of getting this done?

I would say we need to see if there are any others interested in this.  We know this is going to involve both the web code and the database backend.  I am a developer/project manager for a fortune 500 company and have 10 years experience in both areas.  I think we need to put thought in to all the possible ways of awarding points.  I like your idea of doing a line count though I am not sure how you would judge the quality of the content.

I broadened the concept so I am breaking the changes out into 2 phases.  Instead of just giving points for posting a topic and replying to a topic, I am also providing for giving points for joining, for voting in a poll, and inviting friends to join.

Ok, I just realized there are some minor differences between version 7.9 and 8.04 in file naming so I am updating my work to prevent confusion. I need to go back and see if the registration process is different.  So Praveen, I guess its just you and me at the moment.

With the release of 8.05 last week I decided to update both my development environment as well as our live forums late last night so that I would have the latest stable code to work with.

The design document I have so far needs to be completed but the basic concept is to have a points system that has a standard base value for all posts plus the possibility to rate posts and give additional points.  Some secondary features I have been looking at would be points for getting others to join, points for voting in polls etc...

The possibilities are probably endless but I am looking to break this out into 2 phases with the first phase being getting the basic points for posts system in place.

I am also planning on making it totally modular so that there is maybe only one change to existing database structure and any changes to web code will be of the object kind in that we can turn on/off the points system without physically touching the code again and without adding large blocks of code to the existing code.

I actually think the hardest part is going to be working out the ratings functionality.   I could see that adding some  un-thought of consequences so that is probably better for phase 2.

Koen, not sure I understand what you are asking but I have worked with the language file before on an earlier version.  Not sure what the correlation between the language file and a money system is though.  I did have the idea for the second phase to also include a way people could use their points for rewards or the such because points for the sake of points isn't going to go far with my members.

To toss this in the mix...I am working on a SQL only rating system MOD, http://www.darofamily.com/jeff/forums/forum_posts.asp?TID=375 - info here . This MOD is still in the works. Right now I have code in place to automatically rate user's based on the size of their posts, which is a key issue for my forums.

I am working on weigting the scores now. Feedback is welcomed.

Yea, the points system is simple compared to developing a meaningful rating system.  I certainly do like what you have so far.

Why is size such a key issue on your forums?  I can see size being one factor to use but it would certainly be the easiest to abuse.  Here would be my idea for rating a post.

1.  The topic starter could score posts as to how well the answer a question asked.
2.  Admin/Moderator could score the post
3.  Base points for a post would be weighted based on how long the person has been a member and either a straight quality rating for that member set by the Admin or a calculated rating based on 1 and 2 above.
4.  Quality of the post based off positive/negative ratio of keywords.  This one is technically more challenging and potentially may impact performance.
5.  Size

Theres my couple of cents worth.

I have gotten started back on this full boar.  I am utilizing jeffdaro's rating system for posts.  I decided in order to get further with this that I would take the basic design plan I have at the moment and just jump in and just work on doing the new topic post first.  Once I see what it takes to get that done then I will decide if I just need to do this myself or if I should put up some specific requests for other developers.

Wanted to get some feedback from the group on the way I am implementing this.  I am using a 2 number system, one represents the author score derived from jeffdaro's system and the second is a pure points total.  The author score deals with the quality of the posts and the points total would be just that, an accumulation of points.

So what do people think of this?

Here are the particular files I have made changes to so far, this doesn't include the database changes I made for jeffdaro's system.

{root}
default.asp (ln 5 <!--#include file="functions/functions_points.asp"    -->)

[database]
database_connection.asp (rsPoints recordset)

[includes]
global_variables_inc.asp (new variables)
navigation_buttons_inc.asp (to display the users score/points)

[functions]

functions_points.asp (new)

functions_member_API.asp (bug fix)

functions_points.asp

I created a functions script that uses either inline sql or a stored procedure to return the values for the author score and total points.  I am figuring most people do not have access or are not comfortable creating stored procedures.  I will have to bundle this and zip it up.

I have a basic report worked out and now I am having to go back through and create the queries to populate the points table for all the data that is already in my forum database.  I am still a bit away from an initial beta package, and I will probably need some help writing this as a packaged mod script that someone will be able to just run and it create everything for them.

Found a bug during testing that I wanted to point out because I think others might run across this.

If you are making modifications to navigation_buttons_inc.asp and include code that makes SQL calls it will fail for some pages because the closeDatabase() call is made prior to the include for the navigation.  Move it to the end of the page to solve this issue.

I found this problem of course because I am putting the users score and total points display in the navigation.  I would really like to actually store this once as a variable and update the variable only when the user has completed an action that is going to change their score/points.

Actually I was putting them in the standard navigation bar so that it was visible on all pages.  Shouldn't be hard for someone to port them to another location though.
