Hi,

I am a ASP developer who has mainly used VB, I also know a bit of JavaScript as well. But im by no means an expert, can just about see myself round if I have my wrox press books by hand :)

I was just wondering, im thinking of looking into the world of .net and trying to decide whether to go the VB or C# route.

Im thinking on one hand VB will be easier for me to pick up, but on the other with C# being similar to Java then it will help me keep up to date with the client side JavaScript side of things.

WHat everyone else think?

Purely a personal preference. There are very few differences in their abilities which most would never come across.

VB.Net has numerous differences from VB, so if you're keen on C# then thats definitely an option.

However I went from VB to VB.Net and haven't regretted it at all.

Most tutorial / .Net dedicated sites offer code in both languages these days so its really just a personal choice.

Good luck!

Do you think learning C# will improve my JavaScript client side coding as well? With them being similar?

i could see where it would help JavaScript coding, but you should look more at the big picture...

you are trying to learn programming in .NET not JavaScript.... so you'll either be:

- lessening the learning curve of .NET (and trust me, its a HUGE curve) by using VB.NET since you already know VBScript and/or Visual Basic 6

- increasing the learning curve by using C# since now you are starting from scratch on learning .NET, and yes, you'll learn some JavaScript syntax along the way

JavaScript, from what i have learned, is more or less all about proper Syntax, its really not hard to learn once you get that down (and sites like http://www.w3schools.com - http://www.w3schools.com just totally rock)

Thanks for your input MorningZ

Hmmm... Decisions!! I think by the looks fo things VB.NET is going to be the most popular route... and if the time comes where I need to get a proper job and not this freelance mularky then im sure that would be a better asset than C#.

Tho im still not 100% on this one!!

actually, you'll find that a majority of solutions are written in C#

but in the end, the code all compiles down to the same, so within the same project, Programmer A could use VB.NET, Programmer B could use C#, and they could share code/methods
