Hi,
Not sure what is going on. My Admin and Forum Moderator user accounts get kicked-off on what seems like a random event. When using either of the two accounts, while I try to perform such tasks as making a change through the CP, or uploading a file, I suddenly get a warning that says "Only members with sufficient permission can access this page." (even though the top of the forum still says I am logged in.
I can then continue to perform low-level tasks like posting a message, but all higher-level tasks are denied until I log off and log back in.
I thought it was a "time elapsed" problem, so I tested leaving the site open for a few minutes, and sometimes I was denied as above, but sometimes, it continued to work. Tested IE6 and Firefox 1.5.
Any ideas?

One more interesting thing. If, as the Moderator, I get denied to add a picture to a post, I can close the picture window, then hit the "Back" button on the browser, then click "Reply" again, and now I do not get the error message when I attempt to add a picture.

The issue sounds like a problem with the web server holding the ASP session.

Hi,
Thanks for the quick reply.
So is the problem the server not holding the ASP session? It is hosted on a 1&1 server. Is there any setting that I can look for, or any words I should use if I ask 1&1 for help? I am curious why the normal session settings do not get lost (ie, it still says [Logout MyName] at the top telling me that the forum still thinks I am logged in somehow. I did some more experimenting, and here is what I was able to repeatedly do:
- Log in using my Forum Moderator Account
- Post a message
- Click on the "Insert Image" button and confirmed that it was working OK. Clicked Cancel to return to the message edit window.
- Wait about 30 seconds
- Click on the "Insert Image" button again and get the error message. Click "Cancel"
- It still says that I am logged in at the top of the forum, but hit the "refresh" button anyway.
- Click on the "Insert Image" button, and now it's working again.
Now, I will tell you that I did not have this problem with v7. Is there something different between that and v8? I have noticed that to login to the Admin account, I have to login twice: once is the normal login, and then a second time to access the CP. Not a bad idea, but my question is:
"If there was an ASP session holding problem, would it not affect the normal login and normal users as well?" (but it does not)
Thanks! That problem not withstanding, I really like the changes for the new v8.

If you do a search you'll see a few people have had the same problem (Me being one)...
Although I love v8 (& WWF) this is the only bug I have never been able to sort out, no matter what I did it just kept randomly happening to me and a few other people... Just something we have learnt to live with? I think it might just be people surfing through a large network.... As it only happens for me at work, never at home when I just have one computer attached to a Belkin router

Now that you mention 1&1 I can see the problem. 1&1 are not a good web host, just do a search on this forum to see the issues people have with 1&1.
The problem is definitely a session issue, but getting 1&1 to sort the issue would be like getting blood out of a stone. The best option would be to switch to a better web host

OK, thank you both. Much obliged. I'll continuing experimenting.
For others reading this post and considering 1&1:
- The Good: I've been lucky with 1&1 for the last 2 years which is better than the last 3 other service providers: one went bankrupt, one was down regularly, and the last had poor download performance. From that perspective, 1&1 has been stellar, and they are very good at continuously upgrading their tools and offer decent help files.
- The Bad: Their tech support is atrocious (basically non existent). I asked NET 2.0 and got that within 2 months. For both other queries, they took 48 hours to respond, and basically gave me the brush off.

Hi all.
I'm noticing this effect on my test rig, my server is a newly installed MS Sql Server 2000 on W2K3 with IIS6.
It's not in any way a disaster for me, and if the developers would like me to run any tests I'd be happy to help.
