Subject: Recovering administrative access to a forum?

I need some help.  A friend of mine died recently and he ran a popular web forum that uses this software.  Unfortunately, nobody (including his wife) knows his passwords and we are having to deal with that right now.  I need to be able to get into the forum as an administrator so we can continue to use the forums, so I can mark some posts as read-only about his death and obituary, etc.

Through his family and the web hosting company, I have gained administrative access to the website where the forums reside and have been able to admin that, I'm comfortable with using Frontpage.   So I can see all the files for the forum application.  That's how I determined what software it was, I read in the readme and saw it was 8.02 of the Web Wiz forum application.

But I've read the documentation on here and searched the support forums and I have no idea where to start.  I am a complete rookie when it comes to this Web Wiz Forum application except what I know from using it and what I've read on this website over the last hour.  I am not an ASP guru, but I am a techie so I can probably figure it out if someone told me what to do.

I would prefer to not reset his password for the account he used to post with, and was hoping I could just promote my user account to administrator level?  Are there different options for how to fix this situation?

Any help is welcome.   Please let me know if there is additional information you need to answer my question.

Thanks!

Also, I should add that I'm also going to have to figure out how to administer the Mailing List application, he also used your software for that.

First, Using frontpage can destory the forums ASP code. So be careful and dont use it to edit the forum at all.

To gain admin access you need to open the database and reset the first record in tblAuthor with the default record. This will give you basic Administrator//letmein (username//pass) to the forum.

What I don't want to do is mess up any posts made by my friend under his username, and I don't know if there is a way that he could have renamed administrator to the username he used to post, or if administrator is just another user account that he only used for administrative purposes.  Is there a way to tell if this happened, or is it not possible?

If he could have renamed administrator to the username he used to post, is there a way to make a user account an administrator instead of resetting the administrator account?

Thanks!

I'm interested in if this is possible too - making an existing user an admin through accessing the database, or adding an extra user with admin rights. But also, I accidently completely deleted that first value when trying to reset it... Author_ID I believe it was... :\ So can someone help me with what that fields default values are? An empty integer? Null? (I'm using mysql if it's of any help) It's only on my local test installation, so it's no major problem, but I would like to learn how to fix these kind of things.

Passwords are 160bit one way encrypted so can not be recovered.

If you have an valid email address and enabled the email tools then you can use the forgotten password feature when loging in.

If you don't have that what you will need to do is:-

1.Open the database
2. Open the table tblAuthor
3. Find Author_ID with the value of 1, this is your admin account
4. Copy and paste the following to the username field:-

    administrator

5. Copy and paste the following to the password field:-

    A85B3E67CFA695D711570FB9822C0CF82871903B

6. Copy and paste the following to the 'Salt' field:-

    72964E7

Your admin username and password should now be reset to:-

user: administrator
pass: letmein
