This is a PayPal mod for Web Wiz Forums 8.

The first version of this mod which I released was poorly coded, only supported one user group and was hard to install.

This new mod is entirely re-vamped and I intend to keep improving this regularly and adding more and more feautres.

Features: -
  • Supports MS SQL, mySQL and MS Access
  • No Programming knowledge required
  • Online Setup
  • Online Administration
  • Supports payment options for an unlimited number of groups.
  • Allows subscriptions and one off payments
  • Automatically upgrade/downgrade member accounts
  • Set mod to work in sandbox or live mode.*
  • Returns the user to the forum after purchasing
Because I intend to add many more features (I already have a good list of ideas) and I will be offering full support on my website I have decided to charge for the ability to use this mod out of sandbox mode. I will charge $49.99 per year (price inclusive of support and free upgrades for the length of the subscription).

http://www.james-r.co.uk/asp/wwf_paypal_mod.asp - Download

* Live mode only works if the mod has been paid for and registered.

P.S: The contact us, about us and software section of the site is currently under development.

Any chance of a download link where we don't have to register on your forum?

Try the link now.

Although you will need to register on the forums if you need support because the contact us page is not up yet

At the moment the website is down. I was in the middle of redesign the entire site with a more professional design and enhanced support centre but some more important work took over. I should have something up by Sunday. I'll have to let you know.

Apologies for the inconvenience

Hi,

It seems with the PayPal mod that whenever I am developing it loads of people are interested, but as soon as the mod is released barely anyone wants it.

I will put the site and mod download up now. I will let you know when that is done.

To be honest, I think what puts people off is the cost of it - people aren't used to paying for mods.

I'd like to try it out, but I'm still debating using it due to the yearly cost.  I think if it was a one off fee of $49.99, then people would be more interested - you could even say it's extra for support / custom additions etc.

To put you in my position - I'd love something like this on my forum which receives approx. 2,000 hits per day (most of which are returning visits), with about 10 people at a push, who would subscribe for no ads / extra features etc.

As I said, I'd love to try it out though to see what can be done with it.

Cheers.

Ok, the website is now up and running again. I will take into consideration what you have said about the costs etc...

At the moment the website is very basic.

Cheers James.

Just trying it out now and works really well!

One thing though - any chance to have a downgrade option to downgrade to the usergroup they should be in?  Ie, if it's a ladder group setup, then downgrade into the group which relates to their post count etc.

I'll keep testing things out and will let you know how I get on.  Everything looks really good from here though!

Hi,

If someone (lets say a newbie) upgrades to a non-ladder group (moderator) and then decides to downgrade they will temporarily be a newbie until they next write a post, then they will becase the correct non-ladder group.

I could change it so that it automatically does this on unsubscription if you want?

I do intend to add a load of small improvements and features before I release the next major version.

I didn't get a chance to look at this properly as I was getting a few errors and didn't have time to sort throught them (working on the Photo Album mod!)

Are the upgrades time limited? e.g. Our site members consist of a mix general public and Club members who pay a yearly subscription. There is a special Club Member group that we manually assign to them after they pay (either by cheque or Paypal). Come October, we'll need to be removing access until they rejoin for the next year. It's not too bad a job as I modded the registration page so my Moderators can assign groups too, but it'd be much nicer if this could all be done automatically.

You specify a time period for when the subscription is in effect for.

Ie, X days, X months, X years, and the cost to subscribe to that group for that period.

Yeah, I think it would be best to auto downgrade to the group they should be in, rather than having to post to be moved back into the correct group.

I think the page which you subscribe from needs a bit of tweaking - ie, shows what you're currently subscribed too and how long you've got left etc.  Just to make it a little bit more user friendly.

Also, as another feature, you could have a textfield which allows you to put a comment in about the subscription on offer, so people have a little bit more info on what it is before paying.

Ah great, sounds like just the thing we need. People are already paying so it's not a money making exercise for us, it's just to reduce the admin overhead!

That sounds like a good idea. People can be a bit dim sometimes and you'll get people posting "Why am I a Newbie now?". Could it (or does it..?) also generate an email when the subscription expires?

I can't speak on the expiring part as I haven't tested that yet, but if the user cancels their subscription, then an email is sent to the user to inform them, and their account is also downgraded automatically.

EDIT - Do the subscriptions actually expire, or do they continue until cancelled?  Ie, are you making a one of payment for 1 day / month, or does it automatically renew until cancelled?

I know there's the one-off fee option for the admin to setup subscriptions, but it looks as though this is for ever, until the admin downgrades the person manually.

My subs would need to expire after the year was up as we have a fairly fluid membership from one year to the next.

I agree, but to have things like how long is left would require more database work but that can be done, I will consider it for the next verision of the mod (minor version: 2.1).

The one-off fee is just a one of standard payment. This option is best suited if your website sells one product that it specializes in. That way customers are automatically upgraded to a specified group where the can access support forums etc....

Unsubscription only work when the subscription is cancelled by the end-user because when you do this the PayPal IPN page is called.
Thats the only way you can cancel a subscription. I could make the mod downgrade the user but it doesnt stop the payments, so they would upgrade again.

However, it is possible to make the subscription automatically terminate after X billing cycles. This sounds like the thing that MrMellie is interested in. I would have to look into this more and consider it for the next version.

Anyway, all this critisism is really useful because I justed coded the MOD so I could learn how to use PayPal I was never actually writing it for a given scenario.

These are the features I have planned for the next version:
  • Compact Installer
Only uses three files, after the installation is complete these files are deleted.
  • Uninstall
This will allow you to role your forum back to how it was before the MOD was installed (role back of database and files).
  • Password Protected PayPal Page
Ideal if you have multiple administrations. You may only want one person to be incharge of payment management. Also enhanced security, enabling this would be an optional feature
  • Improved Subscription Page
This page will have a nicer design and return details concerning current subscriptions, how longs remaining, etc...
  • Donations Section
Completely Optional. Can be configured to have a "donation wall of fame" which will show who has donated and by how much. This only works if the admin enables it. If enabled a used can opt-out of displaying themselves or the amount they donated on the wall of fame.
I have two major features I want to impliment but I want to wait until version 9 of the forum is introduced. These two main features are:-
  • Shopping Cart System
  • Pay to display post

Sounds good!

Don't get me wrong, it's not criticism - I think this mod is one of the most complex available, and it works extremely well!

Keep up the good work mate!

Hi,
Is this mod (or any other 'pay to join ' mod) still available from anywhere?  the first link doesn't work anymore and the second points to a website that's now under reconstruction.

Thanks,
Chris

No, there are no other "pay to join" mods.

I haven't had the time to further develop this MOD so I stopped it, and seen as Version 9 of WWF was release I saw no point in continuing to release the MOD. When I get more time I might create a new MOD for Web Wiz Forums.
