I've just let loose some of my users on WWF on a test forum on our servers. I've configured it so that WSYWIG message creation is turned off. They found using Prompt Mode rather tedious so started using Basic Mode for adding font attributes. What they've found is that no matter where the cursor is place, the forum code is always placed at the end of the text. This also happens with smilies, so if you want to go back and stick on in halfway through the message, it gets stuck at teh very end.

The biggest pain with this is that it makes it very impracticle to put multiple attributes on some text eg change font, colour and make it bold all in one go as it won't nest the tags without the user either keying them in by hand or doing a lot of cutting and pasting. Is this a known bug or "design feature"?

This is more to do with the limitations of how web browsers work with textareas.

I would recommend that you use the WYSIWYG editor instead if you want to have more control over the look of your posts.

Hmmm, how did I know you were going to say that..? Ermm

It's not like it's impossible. I use lots of forums, which use lots of different forum software and they all manage it in non WYSIWYG mode. Oh well, time for some more code surfing.

If you can find a way to do it that can work across the various browsers please let me know.

I've got smilies working on 97% of browsers. I don't have Safari or Opera installed to check the other 3% though.

The smilies code was already partly there, it was just missing the JS function to update the current cursor position and the calls to that function in the textarea. I'll have a look at the fonts etc tonight as I need to get back to the programming I'm being paid to do.
