I've installed the beta on http://www.morepossibilities.org - morepossibilities.org , a new website I built this week, and I must say the beta is nice.

Here are some suggestions that I would like to make:
  • When a subscriber is logged into the web interface and they are viewing a newsletter, that the token #unsubscribe# be substituted with a link to the Unsubscribe/Modify page instead of showing #unsubscribe# there.
  • When a person is looking at a newsletter via the web interface, the tokens such as #name# and #email# are left blank.
  • Have a way to exclude certain parts of the e-mail from the online version.  It looks funny with certain e-mail specific tokens in the web version.  Example: http://www.morepossibilities.org/newspad/newsletter.asp?ID=1 - http://www.morepossibilities.org/newspad/newsletter.asp?ID=1
  • Change the NewsPad Home link so it says something like NewsPad Newsletter Home instead.  Example: If you change the name of the site in the control panel, to "MorePossibilities.org," then there is a link that says "MorePossibilities.org Home" on the right hand side that does not go to the MorePossibilities.org Home page, it really goes to the NewsPad Home page.  If you change the name of the site to "MorePossibilities.org Newsletter" then in several places it says "MorePossibilities.org Newsletter Newsletter" or "MorePossibilities.org Newsletter New Bulletins" which does not make sense either.
Other than that, its nearly perfect.

A bug in the beta:
  • Many of the pop-up previews have an ASP error and don't work.  When you send a preview via e-mail it works, and when you send the newsletter, it works, but not the web pop-up preview.
Thanks and keep up the good work. Big%20smile

When the person is logged in when they view a Newsletter online the parts #name#, #email# etc. are shown as the persons own details as long as they are held in the database for that person.

Other thinsg will be looked into

Can we please change the parameter in the URL from "ID=" to anything other than that.  Even "NID=" is better than "ID="?  Some search engines do not index "ID=" very well or at all.

Another wish:

We can specify which Admins can send which types of Newsletters/Categories.  That way I could delegate generating announcements or newsletters without give away the keys to the kingdom.

Agreeing with another request by wistex;

Quote It would also be nice if, when a person signs up for a forum account, it asks them if they want to subscribe to the newsletters we want to feature.

Obviously that would be with the WWF9 intergration.

That has already been thought of as along with forum members being able to unsubscribe to comply with European and US anti-spam laws.

We are hoping to launch the full versions of Web Wiz Forums version 9 and NewsPad at the same time so that they can both fully work together.

I've looked at this application, but I don't like it.
Like most Webwiz apps it lacks functions and has an impossible admin section. The admin section looks nicer, until you click on a thing.. back to the old days there... Text links with a lot of explanation.
This applications looks like it's something, but doesn't know what (blog or mailingapp).
Let me give you some tips....
- Get a focuss on what you want with this app. It could work as a portal, but lacks a lot
- Integrate better. E.g. EzASPSite used to provide an integrated portal with forum all in one database. The only lacking things there are a poor admin section (probably because of webwiz app usage) and a poor directory structure at the server.
- Instead of explaining every menu option in the admin section create a help system. A little ? icon behind an option with link to the explanational helpfile would make the layout better.
- It lacks a good layout editor. Can't be to hard to make an admin page which shows all content items (news, archive, rss, etc.) and make it clickable. Turn options on and off and see what you get. Then save as template. Changing colors and see what you change.
Hope these findings help you create better applications.

Let me tell you what kind of application I want:
I want a portal application with the following items:
- Forum
- Guestbook
- Mediagallery (Images, video and audio) just upload the image to a directory and automatic thumbnail and page creation.
- News (forum items on mainpage as news)
- Registerd and unreged users comment (with captcha)
- RSS Feed
- Easy admin section with functional commands and graphics!

The purpose of NewsPad is to be able to send out newsletters and announcements to subscribers, whether they are subscribed via e-mail or RSS.  They also can view it on the web.

I think it does exactly what it should do, which is get your announcements and newsletters out the most people who want to see them, in a manner convenient to the subscribers.

And, when Web Wiz Forums 9 comes out, NewsPad will be an add-on to the forum that would help you build your portal.

You do mention some good things though:

Forum - included in Web Wiz Forums
Guestbook - very few new sites use this any more, although there are plenty of guestbook scripts out there.  I would suggest you not use a guestbook although that is up to you.
Media Gallery - I think this is slated to be part of Web Wiz Forums 9, or at least the image gallery part.
News - That would be NewsPad.  You have to make your own front page though since this isn't a portal software.
Registered & Unregistered User Comments (with captcha) - Web Wiz Forums already supports this for forum posts.  Are you looking for a more blog-like environment?  What are you wanting them to comment on exactly?
RSS Feed - Actually, it would be RRS Feeds. ;) Web Wiz Forums already support many RSS Feeds, one for the whole forum, one for each forum area, and one for each thread.  NewsPad also supports RSS Feeds for each newsletter category and for all categories.  RSS is already heavily supported.
Easy Admin Section with Functional Commands and Graphics - The forums section is pretty easy considering the amount of features available, but I agree it could be prettied up a bit and perhaps reorganized.

A nice layout editor for a portal would be nice, but since I integrate WWF into the rest of my site, I prefer modifying the headers and footers so it looks exactly the same.  Using a template editor sometimes makes it harder to achieve a 100% match.

Thank-you for your comments and suggests they will be looked into.

I think however, you are looking for a Portal application which NewsPad is not trying to be, if you look at NewsPad from a portal point of view you will be disappointed as it is not a portal.

NewsPad is primarily a News application designed to handle News Bulletins and Newsletters for RSS, web, and mailing list subscribers.

There are plenty of Portals out there if you are looking for a portal application, but we have considered building a portal in the past and market research shows that a portal application is not a viable product.

Portals are generally used by home users wanting to dabble in their first dynamic web site, but quickly serious users want to move on to build their own unique web site.

The portal market is already well established with many free open source portal systems out there, trying to break this market would simply be a waste of time as our software is not GPL free open source.

One of the more popular free open source portals is DotNetNuke which you may want to tryout.

Everythings been fine for me apart from a few config changes on the script timeouts etc.

I would say the subscriber listing needs a 'check all' function on the check boxes so you can remove large amounts of subscribers at once, nightmare having to click them all individually.

Also when importing large batches of subscribers your SQL server runs poo poo poo for all your other app pools that are running.  Deffo import batches of addresses at quiet periods, i.e. the middle of the night when nobodies using anything else on your server.
