greetings...

i'm using the Access forums version 8.05, and recently started receiving the following JET error:

Support Error Code:- err_Access_save_new_topic_data
File Name:- new_post.asp

Error details:-
Microsoft JET Database Engine
The changes you requested to the table were not successful because they would create duplicate values in the index, primary key, or relationship. Change the data in the field or fields that contain duplicate data, remove the index, or redefine the index to permit duplicate entries and try again.

this is preventing any new posts or replies.

i checked this error with MS, and it appears that a corruption in the DB has occurred.  here is the link that describes the issue and the purported fix:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/884185 - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/884185

i have attempted to try this fix on a copy of the DB, but to no avail.  there are so many relationships, and the error does not readily identify which table the error is occurring in, that i am unsure if it is just that i am not doing the fix correctly, owing to the fact that relationships must be broken in order to run the fix query.

do you have any insight into this???  fortunately, there are relatively few member posts, but i do not want to wipe the DB and start over if i don't have to.

thxmuch...

You need to compact and repair the Access database.

There is a tool in the admin area to do this, but I would recommend downloading the database, open it in Access, and select 'compact and repair' from the tools menu.

If you can I would also suggest using mySQL or SQL Server as Access is a flat desktop file and not a real database so often becomes corrupted.

i compacted it both with the forum utility and separately in Access, both with no effect.

This is the problem with Access which is why on the download page it only suggests that you use it for small forums if you have no other choice.

Access is not a real database, it's just a flat desktop file, with very limited connections, and very prone to becoming corrupted.

If there isn't a way to repair the database it may mean having to start again, if that is the case I would certainly recommend using mySQL or SQL Server to prevent any such issue in future.
